I've had sauteed skate a few times in a restaurant, so I cannot tell what specific type of skate they were. Pretty tasty. Shark-like texture.
I eat sea robbins all the time when I'm making fish tocos. I just fillet the tail. After you bread and fry them, unless you really try, it's hard to...
Some interesting observations:
small lures can lead to more deep hooking.
Using a jaw grab was preferred over a net based on an earlier study. The fish in the study seemed to be mostly under 30 inches. I suspect that with a 36"+ fish, nets are preferred.
Even their high water temps are low...
Current was light and I fished with a jig for most of the day, caught a bunch of bergals and sea bass, but they just did not want a jig. All the tog were caught on sinker rigs. This fish was caught in about 100' with 30# braid and my conventional Al Goldberg spiral wrap.
I ended the season in grand fashion. We were supposed to fish Newport today, Monday, but the captain called last week to say he had a cancellation for yesterday, Sunday, that the weather would be much better Sunday, and that we might not make it our Monday trip due to high wind.
I jumped on it...
I was at Caumsett Park two weeks ago and saw loads of doe, plus a beautiful 10 pointer, but none of my iPhone photos came out that well after I scrambled to take off my gloves and pull my phone out of my pocket.
My area of the Western Sound (West of Rye and Matinecock Pt.) went from on fire (see photo) to not a tap in two weeks.
Yesterday i tried wrecks at 100' and 70' and rock piles at 40' and 35' and we had barely a sniff.
My boat gets pulled Saturday.
But first it's a trip on the Gypsea and a last...
Mackerel fishing in the late 70's was off the hook.
Boats from Sheepshead Bay would make the run up the east river to fish the western sound.
My dad and I used small tins and freshwater rods, loosened the drag, and those big Macks would take off like a tuna.
Too bad it never came back.
I had a fun day on the Captree Pride chasing the rare, elusive, striped bass.
We broke the inlet, looked a bit to the east, then headed west towards Jones Inlet.
A slow pick all day and the captain gave it his all for a full boat limit. No extended, unproductive drifts.
The bass were gorging on...
Personally, I would like to see 3 fish, 15-19"
We have so many 12-15" fish eating all the food, I don't know how any tog can get big and fat any more.
I send back everything over 18" in my local area, but I'm getting way off topic.
My boat stays in till early December.
Thanksgiving weekend is always good fishing, then it comes to a screeching halt.
Last trip is 12/8 out of Newport.
