So as stated in earlier threads I had purchased this reel early in the season. I only got to fish it about two times this year (sad, i know). While fishing the other day I hooked into a skate and while reeling it in, i noticed the line was not moving but the handle was spinning with no issues. I finally got to "engage" so to speak. My question is, since im new to fishing baitcasters is what other settings do I need to tweak to not have this happen again. I adjusted the drag and I don't think that was the issue. I saw the dial on the left and the knob on the right but after doing research it seems to be more for the casting option in that reel. I really couldn't find much while searching the internet for help on this.

I do have braid. I've watched some YouTube videos of this reel and people have braid and they seem to be reeling in with no issues.

If the braid is too loosely attached to the arbor the entire mass of braid will spin. You must put some mono backing on the reel 1st......say 20 yards of 20lb mono then attach the braid and fill the spool with tension on the line.

The cast control has no effect on the reel's action if you are simply dropping the rig to the bottom. It's to adjust the reel for casting lures.

The tension knob near the star-drag should be tight but not locked down. I loosen mine then try to slide the spool side to side. If you get some play tighten it until you get no play. No more.

Be sure your Flipping Switch in in the proper position. I keep mine well lubed with reel oil.

Hope this helps.

I think you guys both nailed it!! Thank you so much, I don't have any mono on the arbor, so that could be it. I'll let you guys know how it comes out. Thank you again! Like I was saying, I read about the cast control and tension knob and knew it couldn't be anything with that. Now to do some practice ties since I've never done mono to braid. Time to hit YouTube up for some lessons!

Snapper,
There are plenty of "How-to" videos on YouTube.
Check out the Double Uni Knot.
It's easy to learn and, if tied properly, works great.
I've never had one fail tying 30 lb braid to 30-40 lb fluoro.
Good Luck.

Guys are catching small Threshers, Black tips, Browns & Sand tiger sharks from the surf zone outward working on the bunker schools.
I almost got spooled by a 30+lb Cownose Ray with a 4500 size Penn spinner with 20 lb braid.
Had to chase him down or lose all my line but my Double Uni held up.

You never know.

True, I was out in the Ocean on Monday and there was black tips circling the boat. Ton of bunker pods

Hey Snapper,
I've had some success putting some electrical or adhesive tape on my reel arbors before spooling with braid.
One wrap of tape and a good knot to attach worked for me.
Just FYI.

I agree, no need to put mono on a reel that only holds a couple a hundred yards of braid at most, been doing the tape thing since braid came out and not once have I had a problem.
