slow fluking!!

New Angler
HI. Headed down to Great Kills Park beach to try some surf fishing for fluke. Fished the middle of the incoming tide. Winds were light from the SW. Lots of sea grass on the oceanside made buck tailing difficult. Moved over to the harbor side were it was dead calm and no grass. Still some horseshoe crabs around and some of them were tagged. Ended the day with 4 shorts and was actually surveyed by a NYS DEC worker. All in all a nice morning of fishing.

I have had an interesting early summer, with nearly half being 19" but concerned that the lack of shorts that I have caught does not bode well. I use 3/4" jigs, granted with a plastic skirt and tipped with a 4" Gulp, but hardly a bait too large for a 14" fluke. Heck, that size has taken live snappers!
Regarding your asking about carrying Gulp in a surf bag: I have done so with those little sealable plastic bags that hold nuts and bolts that come with various things that needed final assembly. Threw a wine bottle cork or two in the bottom of one of the compartments to allow the bag to be "reachable", sprayed a little Gulp into the bag and off I went.

Hi. I will try your suggestion. Sounds promising. There is a food snack size bag made by ReZip that gets excellent reviews for its ability to hold liquids without leakage. Target carries the bags and I plan to have a look at them. I also

use a 3/4 oz. bucktail or jig head tipped with a 4" gulp and the shorts have no problem eating this. I hope the small number of small fluke that have been caught is not a picture into the future of fluke fishing here as you have noted. Lets hope not. Thanks again
