Do you have a better picture of the Ling? I've never seen them in Greenport.

Unfortunately I do not. They were caught in an about 80’ by Claudio’s.

Funny you should mention Ling. I have been fishing the North Fork/Peconic Bay system for over 50 years and on last Wednesday's trip a friend also caught 2 small Ling near Claudios. I have certainly caught my share in the ocean but never in the bay. Pretty wild!

I'm thinking over the past couple of years there may have been some tiny microscopic ling caught on my boat between robins island and jessups neck that were mixed in with small kingfish that I didn't look closely enough at but in hindsight, I'm thinking about now....

Last Monday we caught one off the Oyster Factory in 50’ water. First one I saw fishing the bay in the 20 years I’m out here.

Picked a few ling from time to time on the deep wrecks/pieces in Long Island Sound.
Nothing like the ling fishing in the ocean. They were always a pleasant surprise when we got a few. Never big numbers, just three or four a trip.

This is the first time I have heard of them in the Peconic Bay

I caught and released a ling last year around this time (maybe a little earlier). I thought it was odd too, and mentioned it to a neighbor who said that it's not unusual, and the bay has had it's fair share of odd visitors. He said years ago there were a few tarpon taken out by Bug Light. Sounded like fishsticks to me, but a Google search turned up a Times article from about 40 years ago confirming as much.

They are not Ling. They are actually called red bake or squirrel hake. Much smaller then regular Ling. We catch them from time to time on wrecks in the Western LIS.

While we're on the topic of unusual fish on odd places, whatever happened to "Conger Eels"? I never seen and references to them anymore and whenever we'd go out cod fishing in the late 70s, we had to deal with them. I've even caught some in deep water off of Northport in the spring?
