NY Mets

Ok opening day is a few weeks away. NL east is looking like one of the most powerful and up and coming divisions in all baseball. We still believe we can win 95 games or more this year. Any thoughts? Predictions?

I always tell myself I'm not going to get my hopes up for this team then spring training hits and it's like "hey they might be good!"

But my feelings on this year is it's just like a lot of years for the Mets. The team has some promise but they didn't do what they needed to do to put them in the legit contender category. They're going to need to have a lot of questions marks work out and health, as always, with them is huge.

I see the potential of degrom/syndergaard/wheeler being pretty promising but Noah needs to keep progressing and wheeler needs to prove he's what he was at the end of the season. Who knows what you'll get out of Matz and with Vargas I would have signed Gio Gonzalez to round out the rotation for some depth.

I'm really excited though to see what kind of seasons McNeil and Alonso have man if they develop right they might have something. It's not really a bold prediction but I think Conforto has his break out year.

Either way I'm just happy baseball is back I'll definitely be catching a few games this year at citifield.

Mets yes ! Me and the bride going to opening day at Citi field this year. Looks like the offense is much improved. Alonso looks like a real powerhouse long ball threat that can hit for average too. Cano is a pure hitter... not afraid to put the ball the other way to drive a run in unlike a lot of Mets In the past always swinging for the fences. Look for Conforto to put it all together finally this year for a whole season. Also look for McNeil to pick up where he left off. Ramos is a huge upgrade on offense. Rosario had a chance to be a good one, he really stings the ball when he makes contact. Yes sir, this is going to be a different year - need our pitching to hold up and we may do some surprising things this year. LGM

SPOT ON!

They made some incredible stupid off season moves but the overall roster is solid. I truly believe in McNeil. He's hit at every level when healthy. They went out and took a salary dump and traded their best hitting and pitching prospect to move McNeil off second, granted they got Diaz but still they could have just signed a closer and kept McNeil where we was. Hell Kimbrel is still sitting out there. To exasperate the issue they go and sign ANOTHER 35 year old second baseman in Lowrie to further push McNeil off his position. In typical Mets fashion they assume McNeil will just play OF. That worked great for Murphy and Tod Hundley... I don't know why they hate solid hitting middle infielders. Luckily Frazier is hurt so he's at least at 3B. I'm praying McNeil doesn't turn in Jeff Kent, Justin Turner, Daniel Murphy where the Mets just missed it.

They never signed a CF so we have Lageras and Broxton who aren't MLB players. They needed another starter for depth as you noted (although Oswalt looked very good in spring training but still you need more than 6 SP for a full season) and in my opnion still really need that one super star in the lineup, Harper just made so much sense for them. Conforto can be that guy but he's the streakiest player I've seen. He hit like Mike Trout in April of 2017 and then hit like Lagers for 3 straight months.

They also greatly reduced their payroll this year if you count the insurance money they get for Cespedes and Wright which is frustrating. They are going for it but reducing payroll?????

Bottom line, the Wilpons are cash strapped. They can't get loans and their existing creditors don't want them taking on any significant risk. Even look at Degrom's contract. It's Bobby Bonilla 2.0 with nearly 50% of the money differed over time. I figured when Fred's pall Selig left MLB would force a sale but it just hasn't happened yet.

All that said this team can absolutely contend but man it's all got to break right.

Excited for real baseball today.

Double play to nail the runner between 3rd and home was awesome.

Perfect microcosm of the Cy Young race last year. Szherzer was more dominant but Degrom was better at keeping runs off the board which is what it's all about.

Me too - he can handle the lumber !! Not sure I like Callaway benching McNeil after going 4 for 5. He has no problems hitting lefties it seems to me.
Alfonso getting benched tonight in favor of Smith... wtf after saving their ass night?

I'm terrified they are going to treat McNeil like Murphy, Turner and Kent. The Mets love to devalue middle infielders that weren't top prospects despite them doing nothing but hit everywhere they've been. They literally went out in the off season and signed 2 more second baseman to move McNeil off his position... WTF.

Agreed on benching him and Alonzo but if they sat him 1 out of every 10 games I'm ok with it but it shouldn't be after 4 for 5. Hitters defiantly get into grooves. It's going to get worse when Frazier and Lowrie come back.
