My father lived on Cape Cod before the family moved to New York. He used to relate a story of a ship being sunk in the Cape Cod Canal during WWII. He said that it was never mentioned on the news and if he hadn't seen it himself, for all intents and purposes it didn't exist.
Decades later I tried to research this statement on the innerneck and at the canal's website. Nothing, nada.
Now, a six or seven year-old kid may mis-remember some details of an event, but it's highly unlikely that they would have such a recollection of a non-event.
So here we are, seventy years later, and it's finally showing up that there was, in fact, a ship sunk in the Cape Cod Canal. It forced shipping to go around the Cape, and at least one ship fell victim to a U-boat attack.
News blackouts. Who'da thunk?
