Brushing up on my marlinespike.

After I burnt yesterday at my friend's doing the fancy-schmantzy small-diameter, anchor chain to rhode for windlass splice, for therapy I thought I'd learn how to do whipping.

Even though I have the rope-smoker (smells almost as bad as pot) cutting gun, experience teaches that eventually the melty ends will ravel.

For the same friend, I had brought a few of his dock lines home to cut the cow tails off, and since I had ordered unnecessary hollow fids to do the splicing, I also ordered a twine and needle kit.

Thanks to YouBoob and my inability to find my father's Coast Guardsman's Manual, there was a lot of unclear information. So, I followed a few videos until I found something I liked. Then I combined some techniques from other videos and my own improv.

Naturally, I practiced on my friend's garbage before I did my own new bow line. When all is said and done, most any technique will probably work. I found something I was happy with, and for a change, I wrote it down. If it survives actual use.... maybe I'll keep my notes.

Ashley's Book of Knots has every knot you can think of, and many you didn't even know about... Want to tie a bow tie, it's there???

Best way to permanently and quickly seal plastic rope: light the end on fire, and then blow it out! Yeah the big black blob ain't nearly as elegant as your art work, but it works and never fails if you let her burn enough, LOL.

My Admiral is well-versed in using worn lobster pot warp! She cuts and joins cut ends using a rope cutting tip on a Weller. Her finished products hold up for years outdoors and multiple washings with a pressure washer!!

The Hamilton Marine catalog has some pot-warp crafts, like doormats. They seem like a pretty cool idea. Especially if you have a supply of the stuff and can DIY.

Prior to buying the cutting gun I'd just heat lines with a candle and mush them. It worked okay too, and results matter more than looks.

Sometimes I do this stuff just because I like to learn new things. I don't know if I'm going to be doing this very often, but at least now I can.

I learned eye splices because I need some specific things for my dock lines, like an 18" eye for the bit on the bow of the Avenger. A single 12" loop is pretty sloppy, and they don't seem to offer pre-made lines with larger splices. And it's also cheaper to buy bulk line and just make what I need.

OTOH, most of my boating career I've tried to avoid knot proliferation. You really only need to know about five for most situations. Then of course there's fishing knots, how to tie a necktie etc. I can run out of memory space pretty easily. So now you know I'm going to have to find this book. At least it will be a good reference for when I can't remember a knot, or need something special.

If you want to lose yourself in something that will keep you busy in the winter, or just make you crazy, this guy has all kinds of rope and string art:

Frayed Knot Arts

So true, but can you tie a bowline behind your back or blindfolded? It's one of my "super powers", a great show off move that's very, very useful when doing a sail change on a dark night in pitching seas when you can't be bothered to look down at what you're doing.

The only reason I can do that is a most amazing way a sailor taught me how to tie a bowline, one that doesn't have "The rabbit coming out of it's hole and going around the tree"...

Friends your not going to belive this as maureen is cooking our supper the electric went out again 2 days in a row Wtf,,,,,,,,,,,, no power at all in our home 🏡 ,,,,,,,,,I called again they told me they are working on it 😖,,,,,,,, no storm today just a drizzle rain now ,,,,,,,,,,,, what bull :poop:,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,just going to wait it out ,,,,,,,,,,,,><)))):>
