Captain's Table - Prospecting Day

After 6 weeks of hard work the boat is finally floating, shining brightly, and ready to fish! Did a solo trip yesterday to begin testing out various drops for our legendary spring Scup run in advance of my first charters next week.

Although, Porgies are available through a wide range of waters on the North Fork it is interesting how even a species so prolific can settle into slightly different locations year to year and even throughout the season. While I found life on each drop, I can already see a small change in the pattern from last year. Hence the need to be on top of things to ensure my fares go home with limits of medium to jumbo sized Scup each trip. Personally, I boxed ten real nice sized fish for the table and through back more than bag limit numbers, with some spots hotter than others. Blood on the cutting board and scales in the box, a sure sign that the new season is underway!

BTW, my board is 32" long so these 2 fish were about 16" each, and I know much larger ones are coming!

If Porgies are your passion, be sure to call me soon as the best fishing for the giants takes place within 20 minutes of the dock from now to around mid-June. Plenty of Scup around locally the entire season but the sizes tend to shrink a bit as we go through the summer months.

Tight lines to all and best of luck in the new season.
