It's ALWAYS a learning experience; out of boredom, did some C&R Cod Jigging...

History dictates that I have at least 10 days before I'm into those striped fish, with 2 weeks being more likely. Yesterday was the first rainless one in a long time and since the lawn is soaked, cutting the grass was out of the question. What to do?? Throw the cod rods into the boat and do some prospecting, of course.

Hit my 2 closest Gulf of Maine humps and the sounder was absolutely devoid of any life, while my jig seconded that observation. Was shocked and dismayed and decided to head back to the barn. The return trip took my over a bay cod hump so I figured WTH, but once again, the sounder and jig suggested I was fishing in the Sahara Desert. By this point I was spitting bullets and right after I finished racking up the rods, I looked down and saw the sounder lit up with fish, a good 200 yds from where they were supposed to be. Grabbed one of the rods and immediately had a 21" cod!! This area is usually awash with lobster buoys so I never really fished it, but yesterday the traps were not out there.

Spent the next 1/2 hour picking at cod from 10 - 24", C&Ring a total of 6 before heading back home. At least I was vindicated, and gained some valuable NEW info about one of my most explored and fished cod hump.

Always nice to work the rod, even if it's C&R. I thought you had a brief Cod opening in the spring, but I guess the ME regs are even tougher than ours.

As far as finding them in a slightly different location, that reinforces 2 well known points. First, you should never take your eyes off the sonar, or you might miss something important. Second, fish really do have fins and swim...and not always to the same location where we found them last!:D

Got back out today and the same spot provided 7 fish from 6 (not a typo) to 20", along with a 6" pollock.

Tired of robbing the cradle so may hit some of my Gulf humps tomorrow morning...

Here's the first double header, had a similar one a bit later on....

After last evening's Sauna River 60°F water temps that got me trying tor bass, even though I should know better, the temps back were to "normal" this AM, river 50°F on ebb, and Bay & Gulf @ 47°F. Had to get off the dock early, 05:45, and with the tide ebbing strong decided to try another casting practice session at a bass spot with the same results as yesterday, Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah...

Went out to my Bay humps with no luck, headed to the nearby Bay Gulf humps and had some action of a doubleheader of 10" cod and a 21" one. One of the doubled up cod spit out a baby unicorn about an inch long!!

I might have to try for some bigger unicorns, that would be a real treat!!

I took off for some other Gulf spots I hadn't fished in 2 seasons and had decent pick, but nothing big until at the time I was just about ready to head home, a beautiful 26" fish grabbed the jig, the biggest cod I've caught in quite a few years. Total for the morning 7 cod, 10-26"...
