Captain's Table - Tog Bite Rolls On

Five more windy days and finally a chance to fish again today with my long-term regulars John and Ricky, joined by newcomers George and Spiro. The moderate NW breeze meant another trip across the Sound to my reliable CT drops.

With only about 90 minutes of the end of the flood to work on the 50’ reef the guys concentrated hard on culling 7 nice keeper Tog to 5# from over 50 shorts. Part of the action included the big excitement of an 8.8# Blackfish that quickly found it’s favorite rock but was ultimately coaxed out of hiding with the old slack line trick for about 5 minutes!

Next moved into the shallows for the middle 2.5 hours of ebb and the conditions allowed me to set up the best position on this drop I have had so far this season. Regardless, the bite was fairly picky with a lot of shorts. Still with a strong effort the guys managed to pick 5 more keepers to 4# with most coming on the more enjoyable light tackle jigs.

With our 4-man limit secured we moved back outside on the last of the ebb as the tide back down. The bite was truly savage on this drop although 99% of the Tog were of the short variety. Still the guys managed to top off the catch with 3 more keepers to18” and a couple of keeper Sea Bass.

Of course, it looks like another long wait until the next fishable day. I sure hope it settles down soon as the Tog bite keeps on improving and I have a long lineup of enthusiastic anglers waiting for their shot at our solid Blackfish action.
