I did hear during a documentary that many people were afraid of the beach after this movie.

I was in 5th Grade in 1975 when Jaws was released . I remember in the Fall of 1974 My parents gave me Peter Benckleys Jaws Novel. Right away I had interest because in the summer of 1973 I went shark fishing off Montauk Point on the family boat and caught 2 Blue Sharks. Movie was released in June 1975 and I'll never forget walking into the old Wantagh Movie Theater on Jerulsalem Ave. at the beginning when they played the Jaws music with the picture of the bottom .
Jaws was much better in the theater with people all around you. More than anything what scared me the most was when people screamed in the theater. When Ben Gardiner's head popped out the bottom of the boat about a 1/4 of the audience screamed out loud.. That scene was so terrifying , I went to see the movie again about a month later with a friend, right before they showed that scene I said to my friend I don't wanna look at the screen because I knew what I'd hear again. So terrifying watching that scene in the movie theater. So terrifying to hear that screaming as a 11 year old . Not the same when you see it on TV.

No lie. I worked at Jones Beach. Easy body surfing for the rest of the summer with no one in the way !
The movie was date night for me, twice. I was 24 that June. If the gal I took the first time had gotten up and walked out at the initial scene at the buoy, I would have beat her to the door. And the head popping out ? Fugeddaboutdit ! Being a WW2 buff (still, hence all the warship modelling I do) I froze when Hooper got Quint to say the tattoo was the Indianapolis. My date grabbed my arm and gave me the "you OK ?" look. I swallowed and just nodded.

It was terrifying when I was 13. I loved the book and even read The Deep, which I loved as well.
Have you seen it recently? One of the stupidest movies ever. Just slasher nonsense.
During the climax, while the shark seems to be chasing the sinking boat and after destroying the radio, Quint declares:
"We're gonna draw him into the shallows... draw him in and drown him

I grew up in Wantagh. I saw Jaws and Jaws II in that theater! Everyone freeked when Ben Gardiner's head popped out. I was terrified of being terrified for the rest of the movie after that.
Good times at that theater. Tunnel Vision, Groove Tube, and Kentucky Fried Movie just to name a few.
Where was that theatre? I must have gone there in the 70s as well.

A sighting of a nine-foot shark off Point Lookout has caused the Town of Hempstead and Nassau County officials to close the town beach and all adjacent beaches in the area Thursday, the areas all red-flagged banning swimmers from the water as shark patrol units using drones and a watercraft search for possible sharks.

I'd guess it's more about liability than reality.
All of us know the ocean is lousy with sharks, but most people have no idea how common they are.
