The Warden is here to answer every question about NY Fishery regs, laws and penalties

As we prepare for the major changes that are coming down the pipe, I am introducing the warden to you. Please do me a favor and check it out. Ask some questions. You'll see we're in beta. You'll help train him. This is not a regulations bot. This is an actual AI agent that knows every law about fishing in fresh and salt water in New York. You want to know who's responsible on a charter boat for undersized fish? Ask the Warden and he knows everything.

I'd like any feedback on the look. There's going to be a dark and a light version. This isn't going to be a website. It's going to be a complete sport fishing ecosystem. So please kick the prop. Put it through its tests. I'm sure there's going to be issues but it's nothing I can't handle.

Thanks, I found it. But it couldn’t answer my question.

so here's a question the Warden did not answer directly. Can I fish for striped bass 1 mile off Block island or from the Island surf? Is the entire island in federal waters or do I need to go 3 miles from the island's shore?

That was a tough one. It'll learn it now. It will probably take a few more tries but the more it trains the more it learns. Thanks for doing this. It's learning as you go.

Oh no and I can't reach the AI right now but I would venture to say that you can fish within three miles of Block Island and from the shoreline but getting the fish from Block Island back to Montauk, now that's a whole different story.

Here is my perennial question re poachers and confiscating equi9pment answered and the answer surprised me.

They do. ECL § 71-0907 gives officers authority to seize fish, gear, and devices believed used illegally. They can confiscate nets, traps, and equipment — just not boats, vehicles, aircraft, or firearms.ECL § 71-0909 covers forfeiture and confiscation of property involved in violations. The law's clear on this. If you're poaching, your gear can be seized and forfeited. Officers don't need a warrant to search your boat or tackle box if they have cause to believe you violated the law.Maybe you haven't seen it happen because most violations are handled with fines and warnings. But the authority's there, and it gets used when warranted.
So then why do all of those glowing arrests and court appearance tickets we read about regularly never mention confiscations of fishing tackle ? Inquiring minds want to know !

Block Island is in Rhode Island. Waters out to 5miles are state of RI. Where you run into problems is out by the sub bouy which is in federal waters. And they check because its a popular spot!

Federal striped bass rules have closed the EEZ since 1990.

You may fish for striped bass from Block Island’s surf or within Rhode Island state waters, which extend 3 nautical miles from the island.
You may not fish for striped bass in federal waters.
You may transport legally caught striped bass through the Block Island Transit Zone only if you are in continuous transit and no fishing takes place while in the EEZ.
