Broke the inlet by 7:30 on saturday AM...easy ride across, and settled in at 25 ft. Had good action and a keeper within 10 minutes, and everyone thought it, but no one said a word. I guess the thoughts were enough because we fished the area for another 2 hours hitting different spots of the reef, shallow up to 15 feet, and deeper to 35. Lots of action, but small fish with the tide change not helping our cause.
Took a quick run to Budds Reef with only one other boat there. Set up at the high point at 35 feet for slow fishing. Watched the other boat nail a number of quality keepers. Moved around but couldn't replicate the results. Very light current there as the tide was still slack there. They left and after trying for another 20 minutes we went back to Sheffield Rocks again.
There were quite a few boats there now, and the incoming was in full swing. I just couldn't get to where I wanted with the other boats fishing so we found a couple of nice spots and still caught fish as we watched the other guys in spots I had marked previously celebrating keepers come over the rail. A matter of 50 feet between both areas and we were on the short end of the keeper stick.
Finally headed back to my LI side spot at 35 ft and managed one more keeper as well as other decent shorts before calling it a day. Water temps 59-60. Nice day, with great friends and lots of fish. I sure wish I could've fish sunday also.
