    Weekend Boating Accidents

Brianna's Law has been passed by the NY State Senate and NY State Assemble. The bill is awaiting the governor's signature. No way to know if it would have prevented an accident or not. We certainly don't have all the facts on the either accident.

    Weekend Boating Accidents

You are required to maintain a proper lookout at all time the vessel is underway-to avoid collisions. If the Captain is the only one aboard he also needs to be aware of his/her surroundings. When I have no-one aboard I am constantly watching my surroundings, side to side and behind. to check for...

    Weekend Boating Accidents

Pequa 1 as you know, I teach Boating Safety for NY State. Negligence is hard to overcome no matter how much education is required. The Moriches accident has me asking, Where were the required lookouts? Lookouts are required at all times a vessel is underway. Three people on board and no-one...

Fish ID taken in the sound.

Pequa 1. No keeper Fluke off Port Jeff today. I only had one keeper so far this year. They seem to be getting smaller not bigger. The good news is not many sea robins either. Catch of the day was a large Porgy, about 17 inches caught at Middle Grounds.

Assembly Passes Brianna's Law to Require Boating Safety & Make New York's Waterways a Safer Place

The reason for the five year window is in part, there would be too many people to certify in one year. If you remember when Suffolk County passed a similar law(which was over-ridden by NY State) no one considered the amount of people that needed to be certified. I am an instructor for the NY...

Our Fragile Long Island Sound Fishery

Agreed. The sound has been very "quiet" so far this year. Not that last year was all that great either. Enjoyed your comments about years back. I have been fishing the Port Jeff area since the Mid 80's and it has slowly declined every year. I remember the Mack attacks in May and June. No macks...

    Brianna's Law

Pequa-1 The born after May 1st 1996 requirement was to slowly move the population toward having everyone take a Safe Boating Course. It was also for the politicians to avoid the "wrath" of the older seasoned boater. There were always proposals to slowly move the date back a few years at a time.

    boating Safety education requirement

Avenger Steve Stern the Suffolk County Legislator who wrote the Suffolk Law represented the Huntington-Cold Spring Harbor area. Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor are "connected". Yes it was a bit of a knee jerk reaction to a tragedy in his backyard. The Captree accident just help call more...

    boating Safety education requirement

Pequa-1: It is a hard questions to answer on percentage of people that have taken a Safe Boating Class. I have been teaching this class for about 15 years. I would say about 50% of boaters have taken a class. This is skewed to the higher side because if you are a boater who wants to operate a...

    boating Safety education requirement

Pequa-When I teach Rules of the Road, Sound Signals are covered in depth. The average boater has no idea that five short blasts are the DANGER signal. Three short means the engines are in reverse ect. Most seasoned boaters don't know stand on or give way vessels. Boating Safety Classes...

    boating Safety education requirement

I am an instructor for the N.Y. State safe boating program. Let me clear up a few things that were in the comments above. The Suffolk County Law from a few years back was in direct response to the tragedy in Oyster Bay. Not the Captree accident. Steve Stern was a Suffolk County Legislator and...
