HAMPTON MAN BREAKS RECORD FOR LARGEST THRESHER SHARK CAUGHT IN CONNECTICUT

About 6 years ago I was running a Bass trip in the Race on the Orient Star and one of the passengers hooked up with a big Thresher who had engulfed the Bass on his line. It was exciting for a few moments but no way to stop him on the 30# class tackle. Also, it was nowhere near as big as this...

    Stolen Fish

You are very lucky, John, that all you lost was half a Bass. A few years back I had a similar encounter while trying to leader a Bluefish into the boat in the Gut. The seal was no more than a foot from my hand and if he decided to lunge at me, I could have lost the limb or worse! Thankfully I...

    Today was the day................

Now that's one heck of a great looking catch! Congrats, Kevin and crew.

Captain's Table - Solid Montauk Fluking

It can still be pretty busy on the weekends, but this trip was run on a Monday, so a little more breathing room! Yes, I do recall some strong bites way west by Amagansett but that is an even longer run. Also, I am docked in Greenport, still another 6 miles west of Orient! These days I try not...

Captain's Table - Steamy Montauk Fluke

Despite the rather toasty temperatures, today’s ocean conditions were nearly perfect for a Montauk Fluke charter. On board were 4 skilled anglers including William, Bill, Capt. Frank, and the intrepid Chef Nader. Started off close to the point on the last hour of ebb and we quickly boated 10...

Captain's Table - Sea Bass for Dinner

Scoring with keeper sized Sea Bass in the eastern Sound has been a challenge up to this point. Tons of culling for only a handful of boxers so far but Mark and his uncle, Joel helped turn things around a bit today on their annual half day summer charter. Tried one of the drops that held some...

What to bring on my Nantucket Shoals Trip Next Week

Post your 2019-2025 Fluke Pix & Trip Reports Here!

A Penn Long Beach?? That was a "Cadillac" back in the day. Why not make it a Penn Sea Boy? Do you even know what that reel looked like? Check Penn's archives if you really want a good laugh.:ROFLMAO:

Twin 7+ lbers and a savage bite!

Great job, Rocco. Those Fluke get really nervous when TJ and his family show up. They do know how to fish!!!

    Flounder & Whiting.......... They're biting!

No argument here, Overbored, about the term "extinct". Some may take the word literally, but I actually agree with you that if the numbers are so low that harvesting is almost impossible you might consider that species to be approaching extinction. Kind of like winter flounder in our NY waters...

Post your 2019-2025 Fluke Pix & Trip Reports Here!

I agree that is great to see Jenn out and joining in on the fun! I hope you let her use that Palmaryus #0 that was pretty hot at Montauk this past week!! I have a feeling she is going to really put the hurt on the Sea Bass next week. I plan on doing some serious prospecting for you this Wednesday

    Flounder & Whiting.......... They're biting!

Somewhere "east of Orient"?? I assume that means long before you reach Europe, correct?:ROFLMAO:

A Limit Can Be Tough To Come BY

Nice work, John! Gives me hope that I might finally be able to find enough keeper Sea Bass to satisfy this coming Saturday's charter. No doubt a north wind and flood tide at the Gut can be problematic when fishing solo.

    Flounder & Whiting.......... They're biting!

Whiting are not quite "extinct" in our area but most of the fish we have seen as a by-catch lately are too small to eat. However, they do make excellent strip baits for Fluke! What I find particularly interesting is that for many years we only saw them in the 100' depths south of Montauk on our...

Captain's Table - Montauk Fluke Opening

Thanks, Crabman. BTW, I forgot to post that this trip is now filled. I expect to have one or 2 more openings for Montauk Fluke in August and will post the spots as soon as the date is decided.

    Captain's Table - Montauk Fluke, Part 2

What a difference 4 days can make. Following a super solid Fluke outing to Montauk’s south side on Monday I had a high level of confidence that today’s crew of Kevin, Niki, Paul, and Depesh would enjoy similar results. The morning started off well with a few short Fluke and Sea Bass followed...

    The Race

I agree completely, John. That size Bluefish is a young man's game!

    The Race

Those are the types that often save our trips when the Bass turn off. Fight like the devil and never quit. I had a fellow on a charter with me several years ago from the Pacific Northwest. Told me he had caught tons of salmon in the 20# + class back home but never tangled with anything as mean...
