I had charters booked for Friday, Saturday, and Monday on this Veteran’s Day weekend, but Mother Nature had other ideas. In fact, all she allowed was a brief 6-hour window today with light winds and only 2 crew members from tomorrows trip were able to shift their plans. Boy was that a good move...

I have had the same observation. Just prior to the last several years the pattern seems to be an OK Cod bite round late December until February. Now even that is getting be a lot shorter. I really miss the days when I used to chase Cod with my own boat from early Spring to summer Coxes Ledge...
On my winter layup periods, Paul is the guy I will always fish with. He is tops!
I also had the honor of meeting his wife last spring while I was running a kid's camp trip on the Orient Star. I notice this one lady was actually more skilled than the mate working deck that day. I approached her...
You did the best you could with the conditions at hand. I wish I had better news, but the next 2 days look even windier. Only possible break, Saturday forecast for the Sound is NW so CT side should be fishable once you get across.
Sunday morning looks like a brief calmer window before the fan...
I always include a mention and some reference to the use of Eldridge at my presentations. If Ward Melville offers me a speaking slot again next spring, I will be sure to expand that section of my talk a little more.
Regarding Tides the "Gold Standard" is not any app but the annual paper publication known as the Eldridge Tide and Pilot Book. It is available at any West Marine location and many other boating supply stores.
A veritable encyclopedia full of navigational information including tide cycles...
Bachala, please understand we mean no disrespect. We are all concerned for a fellow fisherman's safety. However, Overbored's comment about how quickly the "sh*t can hit the fan" are words to live by, seriously.
For the last few years myself and several other professional Captain's I know have...
Great report and trip, Kevin. Although it is always a bit less enjoyable when the amateurs are breathing down your neck constantly. Remind me some day to tell you the story of a Tog trip long ago when this guy pulls up to me close enough to spit in my cockpit and then drops his anchor. I was...
I agree with other posts on this thread.
Another thing to consider. Although the Whaler may be unsinkable, you personally wearing what had to be a significant amount of clothing will go down like a stone should you fall overboard. No fish is worth losing your life over!!
Following a few days off we were back on the Tog grounds this past weekend with 2 different and talented crews.
On Saturday I had my long-term customers John and Ricky, joined by Mitch and another veteran of my split charter crews Frank G. The brisk NW breeze heading across the Sound had me...
I forgot to ask. Did Frank Jr. and SR. change the line on their reels? If you keep tangling with nice Tog like those it could be another disappointing ending!!!
Another excellent trip for you and the family, Vinnie! Always special when you can share it with them.
Over the years Halloween has always seen some very big Tog catches for me as well. Too bad I was working on another project today but will be back at it with the customers this weekend.
Good...
The stretch of good weather this week allowed me to finish off yesterday and today with 2 more very strong Tog Charters.
Yesterday the crew consisted of a couple of new customers, Tony, and Alex, along with long time regulars, Frank G., and the famous Chef Nader. First stop was my favorite...
