Well, we gave it a real good shot anyway
Repeating success has been a near-impossible task this fluke season. Ran off with our host George and my friend Frankie who runs his boat Teresa V out of Howard Beach. Beautiful ocean, light breeze and quarter moon phase made it look like a perfect...
Here’s my current favorite. It seems nearly every year there’s an improvement in line technology. Maybe this new Daiwa stuff will be this year’s bestie.
I was getting to this post, but got delayed by some "events" this weekend. This is a nice enough reel, it certainly has good bones, but Overbored is right, its gear ratio is not optimized for general inshore fishing, like fluking for example.
I can suggest another Tatula, which is becoming a...
Finally!
Headed out to my offshore office with Kevin/Longcast and Capt. Mike on a gorgeous ocean. Hopes weren't very high as everyone knows this fluke season has been something of a disappointment. Going home with a single fish in the box has been the norm over my past few solo trips - the...
No fillet knife is worth $300. I defy anyone using it to out-fluke fillet me using this knife or any other high-priced model, while I use my trusty S2333-9 carbon steel Dexter. I’ve only bought two of those in my entire life. The first one was still serviceable after close to 50 seasons. But...
The ability to fish anytime and any place is helpful, that's for sure. Being bound to one area can work against your efforts, if the fish ain't around.
Yep, the Maine Lobsta' Boat Races are really something. 500+ cubic inch Chevy big blocks, no real power-limiting rules - just raw torque. Plenty of vids of those boats going airborne and flipping over. That's the price of driving a hull to three and four times their design speed.
Don't know if...
The fluke fishing is less than great, so here's a quick vid that I found amusing.
I wonder how much power would be needed to make my boat that fast? 8-)
I go back further than that, as do you, I suspect. I remember the night bluefish chumming with cut butters and smelt on Ambrose Ridge and daily daytime slaughters at the old Acid Grounds. The Patchogue Grounds came later. I was a mate on the BlueFin II back then (very late 70's I believe) - and...
One more season like this and my title will be "former boat owner." True fact. I have a dozen friends with boats. I can go catch the same nothing with them, most anytime. . . and no two months of hard work every Spring.🤕
George - Depends on what you consider "turn on." I've had multiple 40+ fish trips fishing solo - all of those trips coming home with just a single fish in the cooler. Last two trips I would have easily limited, had they left the size at 19". But they didn't - and as you well know, I don't cheat...
This is getting Monotonous
Different day (and week), same result. Sailed solo yday to my "office" for a glorious weather day on the water. Had them coming fast and furious, but not 19.5". The majority were really fat 17.5-19" fish, had to have caught 40+ pcs. Did get one real nice 24" fish...
Obviously we don't pay enough taxes here on LI. Our senior senator Chuck-U Schumer is the freakin' Majority Leader and HE can't get this done? He sux - plain and simple. If he had a son that transited JI every weekend, it would be done toot-sweet!
Well, so much for the best laid plans. Broke the inlet this morning with Capt. Mike and KenScot aboard, got off a few miles and made the call to turn around - haven't done that in at least 8 seasons. A really confused ocean, 3-4's, with occasional 5's and the forecast calling for a worsening...
