I plan to be there and hope we can avoid a shutdown for next season. That would be a very tough blow to all Striped Bass lovers, both recreational and for hires.
If actual science ruled the regulations, then, IMHO, we should have a slot limit for Fluke as well to protect the larger and most successful spawning fish.
However, the slot would have to allow us to take 18" fish so we could sat least be reasonably assured of going home with something to eat...
It's a real mystery and frequent topic of discussion among all the members of my circle of friends both recreational and other for hire folks. Water Temps are maybe a little warmer but not much. There doesn't seem to be any shortage of bait. No obvious signs of increased dragger activity in this...
I have 2 anglers signed on for a Montuak Fluke trip schedueld for Friday 8/29. Openings for two more dedicated Fluke fisherman. Results have been very consistent of late and the latter part of August is prime time for some trophy fish.
Give me a call if you want to hop abord.
Capt. Mike...
I have been fortunate enough to catch a couple of 10's myself and my customers have caught a few as well on my boat off Montauk. However, the largest ever landed on one of my boats was an 11.5# fish off Gardiners in the early 80's.
Now, the sad reality is there is almost no viable Fluke...
You did get the name correct, Overbored. As most will probably recall she wrote lots of articles for the LI Fisherman for years.
I actually had the pleasure of fishing with Lori once many years ago on a Blackfish charter with another local legend, Tony Loperfido. Tony was well known for his...
Fly-casting to Mahi in a knee brace...maybe your new name should be "Ironman"! :D
Nicely done on both species plus spending some quality time with your brother!!
Despite a steady 12-15kt SW breeze and consistent 2-3’ roll on the ocean, today’s group of experienced anglers came prepared to put a nice dent in the Fluke population. The crew consisted of Matt, Jenn, Chef Nader, and my lifelong friend Neil who made a rare appearance traveling all the way from...
Perfect way to honor a grandchild!
BTW, while you are rigging her up, I would say the 2 rod holders I see on your radar arch are a little lonely. Can never have enough rod holders, especially with the guys I fish with! :ROFLMAO:
Right on the money, John Over the past several years I have also seen small lobsters either spit up or partially digested inside the Sea Bass we caught.
On my half day Sea Bass charter Friday one of our keepers spit up the largest one I have seen yet, measured almost a full 8". We used it for...
About 6 years ago I was running a Bass trip in the Race on the Orient Star and one of the passengers hooked up with a big Thresher who had engulfed the Bass on his line. It was exciting for a few moments but no way to stop him on the 30# class tackle.
Also, it was nowhere near as big as this...
You are very lucky, John, that all you lost was half a Bass. A few years back I had a similar encounter while trying to leader a Bluefish into the boat in the Gut. The seal was no more than a foot from my hand and if he decided to lunge at me, I could have lost the limb or worse! Thankfully I...
It can still be pretty busy on the weekends, but this trip was run on a Monday, so a little more breathing room!
Yes, I do recall some strong bites way west by Amagansett but that is an even longer run. Also, I am docked in Greenport, still another 6 miles west of Orient! These days I try not...
Despite the rather toasty temperatures, today’s ocean conditions were nearly perfect for a Montauk Fluke charter. On board were 4 skilled anglers including William, Bill, Capt. Frank, and the intrepid Chef Nader.
Started off close to the point on the last hour of ebb and we quickly boated 10...
