The glove also assists in grabbing slimy fish out of the cooler, and holding them tight as you run the knife into them. You don't have to spend a ton on one. Go to AliExpress and search safety glove or fish-cleaning glove.
Here's an example of what's over there. Around 3 bux (Hint: buy...
Too many. And yes, as I said in our PM exchange. I would recommend keeping the steel hone in the kitchen, as its purpose is to straighten up a slightly bent cutting edge, it's really not a sharpening tool.
Here's the Dexter serrated knife I like for the starter cuts on all fish. It's the S156SC...
I'm a big fan of the original Tatula TW 150P, owning one myself, with the more powerful 5.5:1 gear ratio. Just the right size and cranking power for lighter fluke jigging applications. A very smooth-winding reel.
Now Daiwa has increase the size and beefed up the frame to the 200 size. There has...
I haven't targeted Spring blackfish in 30 years, and will never do so. I do think this fishery is heading toward a total shut-down in the near future. The species is trying hard to regenerate, witness all the "just short" toss-backs. But the second they hit the 16" rec limit, into the box they...
Not much longer. I've repeatedly spoken about this with one of the South Shore's best blackfishing charter captain, a personal friend, and when I asked him where all the big fish have gone, he said "We've caught them all." Between the recs and the comms (as above).
I believe he's right.
BG - I like the Dexter 1378 for bass filleting.
As far as fluke filleting - I use the 9" 2333-9 because I fillet flatfish from the tail. A cut behind the pectoral fins and at the tail with my 6" serrated Dexter, then I go up each side of the spine with the long knife and slice outward. I know...
I've bought a few knives from "the knife guy" as well. He sometimes has the stainless ICEL 6 and 7" fillet knives from Portugal for a very few bux. An excellent alternative to the Dexter "white handles," at half the price. Highly recommended.
And while we're on the subject of knives, I've...
Thank you Roccus for your kind words. After trying many, many different braids, I've centered up on Momoi Diamond Braid Gen3 in bright orange. Thin, strong, lays out beautifully from a spinning reel, doesn't dig into itself on a baitcaster, color exhibits minimal fading after two seasons of use...
If you have an interest in the latest in our sport, this video will have lots of good info. And for a change, most of it is actually NOT just marketing nonsense either.
This video is not for you guys that feel all the newest innovations are useless gimmicks. Of course keep using whatever tackle...
The reel has a disengaging levelwind mechanism. It’s supposed to disconnect from the spool when in free-spool, so to aid in casting distance w/o the “parasitic” drag of the level wind. Also good for free-dropping a tog jig, whilst using a baitcaster for that app, if that’s your thing.
Well, you've seen my electronics suite. I doubt I could get $100 in total for it on the open market, LOL!
A 29-yr old Raytheon radar, 14-yr old 1st-gen Lowrance HDS sonar, 25-yr old Garmin 182C plotter and a Humminbird back-up color fishfinder of undetermined vintage that I have never actually...
Why the heck not?
Daiwa has just released their new "Steez Real Control" line of FW bass-intended rods - carrying the heaviest cost that I've ever seen in a factory stick.

It does feature some true cutting edge tech...
Huh! No offers?
If your wife's birthday is coming up these would make a great "package" gift.
Maybe I can sweeten the pot. Buy the entire lot and I'll throw in a free whisk broom (barely used- like new condition) that I just found in the bottom of the hall closet.
I'm sure she will be...
Nah, shouldn't be necessary. Just slather the blank and tape arbors well, especially the bottom of the blank and you should be G-T-G. Don't forget a generous supply of paper towels and the 91% rubbing alcohol to cut the excess epoxy paste And also to blue tape cover the crap out of your reel...
That's a great story, for sure!
For the reel I recommend two additional products to get rid of the chrome schmutz.
First a short submergence in this:
Then a rubadubdub with this:
Followed by a coat or two of the Flitz.
