Always nice to work the rod, even if it's C&R. I thought you had a brief Cod opening in the spring, but I guess the ME regs are even tougher than ours.
As far as finding them in a slightly different location, that reinforces 2 well known points. First, you should never take your eyes off the...
My 2025 charter season started off with a huge bang for my loyal Porgy fans, Tony and his buddies who make the long drive from NJ several times each year. Perfect weather and light tides made for a very enjoyable and action-packed trip.
All it took was one drop at a favored spot near Shelter...
Well done, Rocco. Looks like TJ has a boat he likes as much as his own!
Still a little cool in the Peconics but things are starting to break open now. I will probably give local Fluke my first shot next week.
Have a great season.
Of course, the CT boats are subject to NY regulations while fishing in our waters. But, as Overbored and many others have noted enforcement is quite lean.
While I have not made the run in many years, it is sad to think that summer Cod fishing at Coxes Ledge is no longer an option. I really miss that fishery.
Sadly, this is a very old and painful story for all the NY Anglers who feel cheated by fishing the same waters as our neighboring states that have more favorable regulations.
The one that burns me the most is Sea Bass. Fishing the North Fork and eastern LI Sound I am constantly frustrated that...
Great way to start, Kevin. Plus, one of those stories that can only happen while fishing. I love it!
BTW, what camera lens were you using? That Fluke looks like a keeper to me!;)
After 6 weeks of hard work the boat is finally floating, shining brightly, and ready to fish! Did a solo trip yesterday to begin testing out various drops for our legendary spring Scup run in advance of my first charters next week.
Although, Porgies are available through a wide range of waters...
While I am not an engineer, I often thought that someone needs to invent an "Ignition interlock kill switch" tied to chum pots, killie carts, etc. to prevent this common problem!!
It was Frank at the long-gone Eastern Reel in Wantagh that taught me that trick. Being located on Merrick Road he had no close access to a creek or live bait tank to work with. He claimed that the killies could survive just by being able to respire through the moisture created by the newspaper...
I guess we all learn certain tricks from the elders who taught us about our passions in life.
I still recall being amazed when over 50 years ago one of my bait guys in Wantagh told me you could keep killies alive in some newspaper wet with seawater in the fridge for about 24 hours. I used that...
Made another big step towards the start of my season today. The "Captain's Table" is officially in her slip and making great progress towards finishing the commissioning checklist. If all goes as planned, I should be fishing by the end of next week.
Let me tell you with the summer like weather...
I never realized the ice water trick was the key to keeping the fresh spearing from bursting bellies. I guess I have been really spoiled over the years by my local bait supplier who always gave me the pick of his top shelf stuff.
Leave it to a pro like yourself to figure this out!!:)
