I’m mostly a boat guy but I agree on the J-Hook for releasing fish. Super easy to use and is effective on all but the most deep hooked fish. I own a few of the $25 to $50 pliers as well. My favorite is the KastKing model - just like where the snipper is on it when I’m tying rigs....
Has to be the scent. Skinner even commented that the action on the Z-Man was insanely good. I think the Snook may be more focused on the movement and “sound” - I know many of his Snook immediately snatched the presentation tight to the mangroves as soon as the presentation hit the water. My...
Haha - this is true. By the way, every time I’m filleting, then cleaning for two plus hours after we get back, I think of you and what you told me about Captaining the big boat and how much less stressful that is......sage words Capt. Mike....
Great report Mike - one of the real good guys in the biz - this is your old “secret blackfish spot“ friend John (used to run the yellow Everglades out of Sterling).
Will be the best addition to your boat, especially if you blackfish. You won't believe how much easier it is to "anchor" with a TM and how close you can get to pilings, jetties, etc. that you wouldn't dare try with an anchor.
I'm not aware of one on the Saltwater models, but they have Remote Controls that you can loop around your wrist or neck. Those remotes allow you to "shut off" the TM if necessary. Hope this helps.
Curious why the knowledgeable folks here think on this. If you catch a 10 pound fluke,, are you keeping or releasing?
Now that I’m older and moderately wiser, I generally release all big fluke with the exception of a tournament. With fluke, almost all the bigger fish are female and I prefer...
We've had two hammerhead sightings in the last two weekends fluke fishing in Montauk (had one follow a sea bass up this past weekend and last week saw a large Hammerhead swimming from boat to boat without a care in the world). Had a thresher grab a bucktail and do an aerial show for us this...

Excellent report Capt Mike, more so cause the drift was so spotty yesterday on the Southside (at least the deep spots). Glad the boat issues are all sorted too....
Another good inlet channel is “Alex” - it’s a French channel but some very interesting and scary content...
As far as the second boat in the Wavy video, he needed to trim up a bit more and get his bow higher. Easily said from the comfort of my living room of course.....
Yup. I’ve been making the long run from the North Fork to Montauk for close to 20 years and Saturday was the WORST fog I’d ever been in. Don’t get me wrong, every year we deal with bad fog days, but I have never experienced thick fog like that literally from my dock all the way to the fishing...
What a lot of the local Montauk people are stating is that the Cabo Captain had his radar set to 12 miles, which, if true, shows an incredible lack of seamanship on his part.
I was out Saturday am too and that was the thickest fog id ever experienced (ran 35 miles from the North Fork to...
He's tough to book as boat season approaches. I know Long Island clients will often fly him all over the country to survey their boats. Ironically, I dealt with him initially because a local buyer was surveying a boat I was selling. I've used him a few times since when I was buying.
