    Wish I Had Reverse Drive

Lol thanks Larry! As you saw I was taking it really easy on my Mirage Drive. A snapped cable in those conditions and I'd have to call for help over the radio...there is no paddling that stupid surf board more than 50 yards!

    Wish I Had Reverse Drive

...I could've stayed on these fish longer. Fluking is so terrible now that 1 keeper makes a video lol

How is the fishing in the Long Island Sound?

Good to hear. My cousin has logged over 30 keepers from shore this year to 6lbs...I've barely made a dent in my kayak since opening weekend!

How is the fishing in the Long Island Sound?

There used to be (like 12+ years ago) a reliable August fluke bite off a certain island in the extreme Western Sound. If the stars align I might have to make the trek on my kayak to see if it's still alive!

    Combat Swimbait Fishing

My guess is prespawn. It's funny, 90% of Japanese bass fishing videos is 30 minutes long with maybe 2 keepers. The fishing there is tough...this is by far the best action I've seen out of Japan, on YouTube anyway. That group of guys make a limited run of their swimbaits and swimbait...

Caring for your Catch p1: on the water

It's probably best to kill the fish asap to avoid lactic acid buildup from stress. The absolute quickest method that's employed by the Japanese is "Ike Jime," which involved brain spiking with a sharp ice-pick style tool (instant death, least amt of suffering etc), then inserting a length of...

    Spanish Mack Catch and Cook!

Thanks George! Yeah that convo was cut off...I was talking about the Deba knives Japanese chefs use to cut fish. They are like fish cleavers...very heavy blade, chisel ground, and it's a completely different filleting process to the one we're used to. Imo it gives a cleaner final product...

    Spanish Mack Catch and Cook!

I don't do much shore fishing for anything but fluke...this southern species might be a focus for future trips: delicious!

    Fish Tacos!

Oil temp is key, I generally just flick a few drops of batter into the oil and if it floats and bubbles right away it's ready. Also, don't crowd the pot, it will lower temperature drastically. Fish should be as dry as possible. You can also help batter clingage (??) by a light dusting of flour...

Did you ring mold avocado slices around the tartar? Bravo!

    Carp

I went through a carp phase...hair rigs, landing mats, telescopic nets, the whole 9yds. Eventually I developed such an affinity with carp that I couldn't see them in distress anymore (I'm starting to get that way with tog too...other species I slit their gills and bleed em out w/o a thought...

I Had No Business Landing This Fish

    Collaborative Research on Flatfish

Cobia being caught more and more often in NNJ as well. Some guy weighed in a healthy specimen from GK, Staten Island this summer (chunking from shore lol!) Sooner or later the anomaly becomes the norm. Past 5 years has been "weird" as far as fluke patterns are concerned, esp in the early...

    Collaborative Research on Flatfish

Fluke have been shifting northwards for decades (hence the NC comm quota that they can't fill even steaming up to our waters and beyond). The past few seasons in RB has seen ridiculously lopsided short to keeper ratios...which fits the pattern of fluke gravitating towards the northern end of its...

I Had No Business Landing This Fish

Thanks Rick, I must say that Seaguar STS leader impressed me...thing was shaved to hell but held. I had a 6lb tog split 15lb STS into 3 splices but held, very good stuff. Likewise the Decoy jig head was perfectly fine, hook didn't bend at all lol.
