Heard an Interesting Van Staal Rumor

Wouldn't work for me at any price. I'm a leftie and prefer my spinners to be cranked with my right hand. Also, I prefer a slower retrieve for my bottom fishing (fluke/tog) reels.

Wanna build a rod but don't have a table-top wrapping setup to spin on the threads?

I also like the carbon fiber guide frames. Looks like North Fork Composites (Gary Loomis) emulated Daiwa's high-end AGS guide system, except he'll actually sell a set to you. 👍 Unlike Daiwa. 👎

Here's what the silk thread looks like when top coated Here it is with trim wraps

I hear ya. I understand that paint job is $5-7K extra on certain German cars/SUVs. A fool and his money . . .

So you just HAVE To have a high-end fluke reel color-matched to your rod wraps?

Have you discovered the "Baby Blue" Power Pro Super Slick line yet? Perfect match for your outfits. Geez, I did forget, gotta go with matching-color baits as well. These Blue Fuze Gulps are the bomb. Even more so when fished on a blue-themed outfit.

Wanna build a rod but don't have a table-top wrapping setup to spin on the threads?

Nah, I think it looks kinda cool - like a "murdered out" full carbon custom rod. That's why some guys wrap black blanks with completely black thread. Not my style, but it does look legit when complete. What the vid didn't show is that some guys doing this carbon tape thing do put a thin trim...

    PENN SLAMMER III MAINTENANCE MISHAP

You could do that, but you'd need to use a bolt or machine screw with the threads removed, or you'll chew up the center bearing or bushing of the oscillation gear. Probably better to make a machine screw of the proper length, using a piece of exact diameter stainless rod. Then use a die to...

I'm glad you pointed this out. It is an objectively true statement.

Wanna build a rod but don't have a table-top wrapping setup to spin on the threads?

Never fear, NFC (Gary Loomis's rod blank shop) to the rescue! Of course you still need a way to rotate the finished rod so the wrap coating dries evenly. But putting together one of those is peanuts, compared to a full wrapping set-up. Or maybe a better thought, build your rod and give it to a...

So you just HAVE To have a high-end fluke reel color-matched to your rod wraps?

Fear not, Daiwa's hot rod shop "SLP" to the rescue! Just don't ask what this will cost! The link works, I'm not sure why it says it doesn't.

    PENN SLAMMER III MAINTENANCE MISHAP

Sounds (and looks) to me like a casting flaw that finally let go. Note the somewhat coarse grain structure of the housing where the stud broke off. Not good, when it comes to aluminum casting. My friend had this exact thing happen to his Daiwa BackBay LT3000, which was an otherwise pretty stout...

Heard an Interesting Van Staal Rumor

"Need?" Who said anything about needing it? LOL! Other than the surf guys, for most other users of this type of reel it's really more a vanity thing than anything else. Or maybe they just like nice things. I say, if someone can pay the fare, why the heck not? Same with cars. Does a suburban...

Pretty little things. Probably in the $700-range. I wonder what the weight will be? Should be sub-10oz to match up with rods designed for that size reel.

My friend Kevin/Longcast did some digging and came up with this. It's from Hadrell's Point Tackle, a South Carolina fishing shop's FB page:

Heard an Interesting Van Staal Rumor

Have heard a few times recently that Van Staal is bringing out a brand-new sized "VR25" spinner to market. That puts it right in the 2500-3000 size class. Just something to keep in the back of your mind if you are looking for a high-end spinner that should be way tougher than the other reels in...

Do we REALLY need a small spinning reel with huge factory drag ratings?

Also, the lighter the braid the more likely it is to dig into itself on the spool when a fish is running under decent drag pressure. Originally we were using 50lb braid to combat this issue. But the latest lines seem to be better at preventing this. Along with revised line-lay reel spooling...
