For ocean fluking in NJ, a West wind is best. Today was our best day of the season as a light West wind with outgoing water pushed us from the wash out to 45 feet deep. They were chewing good today, even the shorties hit with attitude. It was easy to repeat our drifts at the most productive...
Fine Friday Foggy Fluking &Thumbs-up on Gulp! "Baitfish"
Hit the Ocean early this morning with Jakesdad and crew. We got about half a mile offshore and the fog hit us suddenly, forcing us to turn around and fish the river for a while. The action was constant and we never did go back outside...
Title of this thread made me think of current slot fluke regs here in NJ. With a bag limit of 1 > 18" and 2 between 17 & 18", many times we are throwing back overs looking for the smaller slots. ... smh..... and now we'll be doing the same with Stripers looking for 28-31" fish,,,, smh...
Arthur Kill Fluke
Went over Outerbridge Crossing countless times, never did I once think I'd be fishing underneath and north of it. Today was that day and it wasn't bad. Killies are recommended...
NJ ocean report: after a quick Sea Bass limit, up to the almost 6lber pictured, we finally scored some fluke in the deep. As water warms it'll only get better..

Quick boat limit today out of Pt. Pleasant. Most on clams but when they spit-up Sandeels we switched to jigs . My son got a nice surprise by-catch. Finished day in River but fluke were all shorts.
Enjoyed it, thanks George. I liked that you criticized the Md. Trophy exemption and pointed out that Chesapeake stock is hurting. I would like to learn what other measures ASMFC and others are taking, specifically banning Bunker reduction . Recs take it on the chin again for others'...
My NJ sources say that NJ will comply effective 7/1. Some points to consider, raised by my same NJ source:
....... If there's a decline in Striped Bass populations you certainly don't see it here in NJ, our area is practically polluted with them. I think we've been good stewards of the fishery...
Season opened on Tuesday but brown water made us wait until today. Fished Shark River and did well with the fluke and blues. Coast Guard performed safety inspection on the only boat on the river - us.. Hopefully it's a sign of good things to come...
Some interesting points here raised by my friend in NJ.
Striped Bass Slot
If there's a decline in Striped Bass populations you certainly don't see it here in NJ, our area is practically polluted with them. I think we've been good stewards of the fishery here. No commercial fishing...
". . . his eye caught splashing on the surface of the water over a mile away, a little north of his course, so he steered closer to get a better view. As the Holdfast got nearer he could see that it was a Whale desperately thrashing about on the surface, slapping its tail, and even rolling...
They're here.... Ocean Striped Bass fishing in NJ is open all year, however river/bay fishing opened on 3/1. Raritan Bay is the usual early season Hotspot but yesterday the ocean turned on too. Looks like the Chesapeake fish are ahead of schedule and they're on Bunker. Raritan Bay is an...
8 dolphins beached themselves at Sea Isle City today. All 8 have died. Witness said they were frantic swimming back and forth, then went over the bar directly into the beach ! Survey was taking place just offshore for the OSW project...
Great post PaulE & welcome to this friendly, helpful community.
I fish NJ and do not agree that "Most of NJ does not catch BSB the way they used to, so they get better regs". BSB are now more prolific in NJ than ever b4.
This war between neighboring fishing states is wrong; as wrong as the...
This honor can only be bestowed by Pete but I feel the new Jigging World Onyx is worthy. With first hand knowledge of 20+ years using the Lep Stick (Bass Pro Musky XH) I look forward to Pete's input. The Onyx comes in spinning (up to 9') and casting (7' or 7'6") models. Lep Stick OG...
