Bluebird day today. Warm, wind finally laid down. Fished the Port Jeff area. Loads of small blackfish. No keepers for me today. They all seemed to stop growing at 15-3/4 inches.
Hard to get the boat to come back hard on the anchor. Line was not pulling tight after setting the hook...
Fished the Port Jeff area today. What a pleasure that the weatherman finally got it right. Sound was dead flat. Current was running a little bit.
Picked through many small black fish but got my legal limit. Three nice blacks about 18 inches each. One nice sea bass about the same size. Loads...
The weatherman really got this one wrong!! It was hard east coming right down the sound. Fished outside Port Jeff due to limited options thanks to the weather folks. Picked some small blackfish. One keeper that went back. Some small to large sea bass and a few porgies. Lots of Bunker...
Fluke fishing in the sound was very slow all season. Only had one keeper the first trip of the season. It got worse from that point.
The Port Jeff Fleet did not bother fluke fishing. They started the season porgy fishing and never looked back.
Hoping next year is better
Couple of things here. You can have your boating safety certificate added to your drivers license. Yes they put a little anchor in the corner, DMV charges to add that your license. That is why most people don't do it. We give NY State enough money already.
Read the comment regarding Captains...
Hi Aquarius: Yes your six pack license is fine. It supersedes a boating safety certificate. I also carry a 50 ton license. Not being a jerk here but I have been asked this question also, the license must be valid-current to be accepted. Been asked more than once if an expired Captains...
In General any course given by a power squadron, US Coast Guard Auxiliary or the NY State Course.
I do not know of any list of approved courses. Basically if you have proof of a boating course it is OK
Boat Guy. If you have a boating safety certificate from the Power Squadron you should be fine. I teach a different class so I am not familiar with a Power Squadrons Certification requirements. The class MUST be NAMBLA approved.
I teach the class approved by NY State. The material taught...
Brianna's Law is being phased in over five years. I am an instructor for the NY State Safe Boating Program. Due to Corona Virus, no classes could be held this year. Pequa 1 is correct that no instructor can teach common sense. However I have had students tell me years after taking the class...
We never got the second wave of Fluke last year. I fish the Port Jeff area often. The early season-last year was OK. We never got the second wave of fish that usually arrive the 2nd or 3rd week of June. They seemed to stay on the east end and did not travel down the beach
I was very optimistic...
Land and Sea in Coram helped me a few times . They are a Sea Lion dealer
The trailer superstore is also a good source. The only thing I found was there shipping charges can be high.
I cancelled a couple of orders with them because after the shipping charges were added on it was less expensive...
The concern with the flares is they dripping of flares when ignited, The drips can cause a fire if not held over the side properly to drip into the water. The flares do work well. The user has to understand the risk when igniting one.
The SOS light that replaces flares is USCG approved. The good thing about the SOS light is no expiration dates to worry about. The SOS light comes with an orange distress flag inside the box. The package also includes a letter from the USCG saying the SOS light is approved to replace flares...
Glad a few of you had a good season. I grew up fishing the western sound-Hempstead Harbor, all points west and east to Lloyd neck. Fish mostly the Port Jeff area now. Black fishing has fallen off every year I have been fishing the area. Over 30 years to be exact. Many small fish this year...
I would like to see the potting of blackfish stopped or controlled too. The DEC seems to either ignore the problem or is afraid to take it on. My opinion is they want no part of addressing the issue. The old Shoreham pipeline used to be a great spot to blackfish years ago. I heard that this...
