The freefall windlass on my friend's Grady may be viable for single-handing.
OTOH, there's not a lot of margin if you don't have a deckhand.
I finally found the picture of the anchor we bent. It's pretty impressive. And just to clarify, the cable crossing is on the other side of the bridge. I...
Brushing up on my marlinespike.
After I burnt yesterday at my friend's doing the fancy-schmantzy small-diameter, anchor chain to rhode for windlass splice, for therapy I thought I'd learn how to do whipping.
Even though I have the rope-smoker (smells almost as bad as pot) cutting gun...
Huh. Who knew?

I wonder if there are any moon trees on Long Island.
I've still got several of these old brass wire rigs that were my father's. I'm mostly using them until they disappear.
Needless to say, my kid will probably be fishing with them. I believe I've got enough cr@p to open my own tackle store.
That being said, I'm a fan of bucktails and tied...
I've probably brought this up before, but another forum I was on had a password protected section for members who wanted to bicker over politics or post politically incorrect pictures of ladies.
Moderation was pretty light, basically making sure there was nothing hardcore and the political...

There's about seven rap songs that I like and that was one of them. That's also the same age that my father died from cancer complications.
Cancer sucks out loud.
Sorry, no pics, but saw a Bald Eagle flying over All American in Massapequa when we were bringing Avenger Jr. home from campus.
The irony was not lost on me.
I would have been too young to remember that specific incident. But I do remember flying the DC shuttle a few times. They actually let me in the cockpit of a Lockheed Electra on one flight. I also remember the '70s as a busy time for hijackings planes to Cuba.
Different times.
Considering how they fukked up last year's prediction. Because, you know, CLIMATE CHANGE!,... I'm not surprised they're toning it down.
Sadly, they'll probably be wrong again. :(
That clip never gets old. Especially Curly sawing the throttles until he goes down like he's pole-axed.
Maple Leaf Rag accompaniment just nails the mood. Nice work.
There's always cr@p around the bridges to grab your gear. We really haven't had any issues with cable crossings anchoring on the West side of the Meadowbrook. There's still a chance of snagging some junk with your tackle, but it's pretty minimal.
The Wantagh, OTOH, is a lot more challenging...
We're usually set up around the same distance as the furthest protective piling, and they don't give us grief. In this case we did end up a little closer (if you look at the alignment if the pilings in the pic we're almost even with and slightly ahead of the second set of pilings) because of the...
