I have so many friends with boats that have given me standing open invites that it’s becoming a viable option. Don’t wanna do it, but at 70 years old now the boat is becoming a burden, both physically and financially. Oh, and recently, mentally as well. Just heard from a friend that he has a...

Thanks! It takes a ton of on-going effort to keep a 39+ year old production boat looking and running fresh. Hence my earlier comments. Did you happen to notice the look of disappointment/disgust on my face? Because I'm sure it was there.

I'm starting to think the formerly unthinkable, regarding next season. Why fork out what it costs in time, effort, and money (of course!) for these crummy results? Make it make sense.

Just to add on - fished solo yesterday. Hit George's favorite inshore reef (see his avatar), which is absolutely infested with shorts. Drop and stick fishing. After an hour of this I headed deep - for more shorts, albeit much healthier ones. Actual final count for the day ( I kept track) 49 fish...

What's your opinion on the ICAST winner?

I have already seen numerous on-line ICAST reviews of this reel (because being a reel nerd, that's what I do at 05:00 during breakfast - and during work breaks as well), and I did look at the article. Nowhere to be found is exactly what those supposed "Power Digigear and Pinion" are made of...

What's your opinion on the ICAST winner?

Are you asking me? Well, Okay, here goes - if they are still using those zinc/pot metal gears in the BG series, then as Randy Jackson used to say on American Idol, "It's a hard pass for me, dog." Next time you're in there, Ask John @Trophy Tackle about the longevity of those gears. That...

Had George and Capt. Mike aboard for an offshore trip yesterday. A fairly significant 3'-4' roll with a light East breeze made figuring out my drift lines a bit tough at first. Anyway, we caught plenty of shorts, including a pair of 18.5" on the last drift, but only found a single fish for the...

Any opinions on this X-Braid winning best of show at ICAST

Be careful, X-Braid is made by YGK/Japan - I believe. The Daiwa line you linked to I tried and hated. Very low abrasion resistance. The regular J-Braid I still use.

Only one for me in my entire life. 11.2lbs in 2006 - hit a tandem-rigged squid over one of my old-time open bottom drops. What a beauty she was too . . . Jeez, I look 20 years younger. Oh wait . . .

Hi BG - when I mentioned "Smelly Jelly," that was a very old product from the '90's (I think) and I was really referring to a type of product, rather than a specific one. This is what I would use if I were to really get into this type of fishing: https://www.pro-cure.com/collections/scents...

In case anyone wants to give the drop-shot technique on our fluke - here's a nice "starter kit" from Berkley. If it were I, I'd schmear some sort of "smelly jelly" fish attractant on them, but then that's just me.

    Centaur Rod Sale

At those kind of prices, these rods are a steal. They really need to be seen and flexed in person, because based on the ones I've looked at, some of the models are VERY parabolic (like a true Japanese-style slow pitch rod), and that might not appeal to everyone's taste. Super solid values at...

Broiled fresh fluke roll-ups stuffed with shrimp, seasoned bread crumbs, Old Bay, sliced garlic and a dab of butter, over balsamic arugula. Sautéed local Cauliflower side with chopped tomato, garlic and bread crumbs.

Yes, from what I've seen that is the way the FW guys do their rigs. Here's young Stephen's lure. He runs the hook all the way thru to the tail, than hangs the belly on the hook as a trailer. Looks almost exactly like the "bay anchovies" (rain bait) that we see out there. I find it...

I don't think its much of a "secret lure" and really, it looked nothing nothing like that. That's just a fancy swing-hook fluke ball cast to look like a swimming minnow jig. I have a few of those stashed somewhere in my garage. What Stephen used looked kinda like a life-like minnow, with a dark...
