I'm thrilled that my NJ friend BroadBill is now here and engaging folks with his extensive findings that he's formulated over the last 10 years. I know he is preparing his detailed reply to MakoMike but here is a preview of his stance and mine: (FYI - Department of Commerce oversees NOAA...
Let me repeat this factoid from above :
North Carolina holds a massive share of the coastwide commercial quota (often around 20–24% of the entire East Coast allowance).
Because North Carolina boats hold these highly valuable state permits, they are legally!!!! allowed to harvest huge quantities...
The winter off shore spawn is when the comms target this naturally occurring fluke biomass, thus facilitating upgrading to larger fish for higher prices. Maybe the biggest offending comms (Virginia and North Carolina) would changer their ways if the winter spawn period is outlawed. All I...
Under the federal Summer Flounder Fishery Management Plan managed by NOAA Fisheries and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, commercial quotas are allocated to states based on historical landing data from the 1980s. [1]
North Carolina holds a massive share of the coastwide...
Re: Assessment of 2026 fluke season and status of fishery
I'm retired now and was able to target Fluke in 2026 more often than I ever have before. I had a great year quantity-wise but not quality-wise. I always go Scouting b4 the season from shore (until I got correctly called out by Angler...
I lifted these 2 posts from the NJ website where originally posted. I'm hopeful the NY comments are productive and the arguments can be used effectively when meeting with fed regulators next year... thx

Caught many Fluke on Friday on Clams when targeting seabass at inshore NJ reef. Was tempted to try for out-of-season fluke but the by-catch Triggerfish and Blackfish kept me clamming. Great 88 degree October day on water with son, unbeatable. But yep, the Fluke are still here. . . .
They're still inshore and so are the seabass, big ones at that.
Hopefully September is one to remember 🤞 .. today we never fished deeper than 60'. My crew loves to be back at the dock by Noon; cleaning fish in the sun now seems to take longer than ever 😕
Weekend Recap
Sat. - was joined by my son Brian and his g/f on the best charter boat in NJ. The 3 of caught nearly half of the 30+ keepers, happy to keep the captain's Fluke charter limit streak intact. Dana caught her PB and cooked us all a great dinner, impressive after 7 hours at the rail...
A shortie spinner is my go to rod for Striper jigging and tossing swim shads from a Party Boat. You can really fling 'em underhand better than with a longer rod
Best Fluke Bait This Season
Hopped on a Belmar NJ party boat yesterday b4 the storms, glad I did. They were hungry and hooking themselves (love when they inhale the bottom jig). I was the only one on the boat using Salmon skin strips and I was easily high hook. Mates were skeptical that it...
Many thanks Ally and Bachala. We may do twilight mixed bag if not the full day trip.... BTW, Amanda on Osprey is The Bomb, they spend winter in Atlantic City togging and I love their operation...
My buddy is visiting LI and I hope to meet him on Thursday to get out on a party or open boat for whatever is biting best. Half day, full day, evening doesn't matter, I just need to learn what boat to patronize or avoid, Captree preferred. I'll have tackle , gulp, rigs, etc for us trying to...
When I lived on LI I had a boat in the Sound. Since I moved to NJ 40 years ago I have something better - friends' boats!
I'm the same age as you Pete and we both yearn for that tug. My crew (all older than me!) depend on me to get the boat prepped and tucked in b4/after every trip. It's my...
Good conditions = good fluking. Long, repeatable drifts over productive NJ bottom today was the key, we never left the area. My 3 biggest went 22, 23, 24". Salmon belly was bait of the day, inshore of 65', outgoing tide, water temp 72*, nice seabass too !
I may've posted this on Noreaster but can't find it now,,,, I love the new reports! There is such specific local knowledge others may call it spot-burning, I call it helpful. I'm thrilled that the NJ reports are broken down by region and not lumped onto one. Inshore vs offshore is also a nice...
