Thank you. That's very helpful. My electronics get wet a lot and invariably it's either water penetrating the display and fogging up in the heat or corroded connectors that spells the demise of my unit or my wiring. I've used white (lithium) grease, and up to now I considered it my best option...
Got out before sunrise to try some south shore beaches for more stripers and wasn't disappointed. Nothing happened until after sunrise, but then it was pretty steady. These fish are on the move...
...like this chubby 27 incher that tried to get out of the photo shoot. Most were closer to 20...
The short report: tons of schoolies and some rumors of bigger bass along the south shore beaches. There were no birds marking them, but the bass were (and still are) right in the wash. I'm using white A-17s, but bucktsils are probably working too.
The "kayak fishing" part:
It would be an...
Haven't done much in the last pair of trips, over four days. Just some medium-sized (24") bluefish. I was trolling in about 25 feet of water around North Bar. There weren't the concentrations of bait that I'd seen before all the weather moved through the area, and I'm still seeking that elusive...
I was fortunate enough to be able to speak with two noted marine experts (scientists) who have examined the longitudinal data and when I asked them (separately) why I was seeing more and more sharks each year, their response was the same. Warming ocean temperatures are widening the gulf stream...

Last year I posted a piece about sharks and kayak fishing that had me really considering how I was going to reconcile my desire to pursue big fish the way I love and my personal safety. My conclusion last year? At its core, it's a mental thing. If I could go out and have a good time, go out and...
Good to hear, Rick. I couldn't catch a cold in JBay. At least not like I could have been. I said to my buddy Pete after he outfished me there twice in a row "I like Shinnecock bass better. They're dumb and hungry."
Even the split rings can be a science: the newer triple rings (with higher lb capacity) are too "wide" for a size 2 clip and will bend it open when stressed. I bend more clips than split rings, but you can't skimp with them either. Cheap ones will bend open.
OK, so a friend of mine said to me “What’s up? You haven’t been posting.” I said “That’s because I’ve been catching.”
So for the short report: I had numerous bass, generally between 36 and 46 inches, over a five day stretch. I got them trolling a crystal minnow in 20 feet of water around False...
I had to avoid my favorite Shinnecock haunts, in part because of tides and when I could catch the tides, because of the boat traffic. As I arrived at my launch spot, I was anticipating lots of company. There was very little. I got out to where I wanted to be and for the first hour had only two...
There's a bite around Shinny. It's just a little inconsistent. Where you get them hasn't changed, but when and how seems to change daily. I'm getting bass to around 29" in good numbers about every other day. The "inbetween" days might see one bass and ten bluefish. Hit-or-miss. I'm trolling...
The thing that I love most about kayak fishing is the way that it requires the angler to be uniquely attuned to the water conditions while at the same time managing the fish. For me the perfect night is the night where the bite is hot but conditions are challenging and you're fighting big fish...
