Is this a joke? When is the last time anyone actually caught Yellowtail Flounder in the areas suggested, with perhaps the exception of Sandy Hook. In my experience our east end Flounder fishing collapsed over 20 years ago.
Hi George,
Thanks for the update, as painful as it might be. Better to be prepared ahead of time and try to have some influence on the direction this all takes.
Sadly, when tax revenues are at stake our government seems to know no boundaries. What scares me most is the knee jerk reaction of...
Thanks very much for the compliments. There are guys on this board who are far more expert than I when it comes to tackle repair and customization. However, I know my own limitations (didn't Clint Eastwood say something to that effect?) and when the job becomes too complex, I seek out the help...
Reels look great, Low Gear and I'm sure you will find them a nice improvement over the stock handles.
However, remember what I have told Lep in the past...if you bring that pink stuff on my boat you better be wearing a skirt!!:)
Today’s charter with the Angelo party was a special one indeed. With the help of his dad and Grandfather we created a “newly minted” angler in 6 y/o Elias. Our voyage was his first ever on a boat as well as first ever fishing trip. I set us up on one of my favorite and well protected Porgy drops...
Thanks for another interesting Podcast, George. I thought I listened pretty closely but I have to agree with Pequa that I did not hear a definitive ruling on whether or not you can use Fat Cow or Otter Tail synthetic stirps on a bucktail with a J hook and be in compliance. The written "proposed...
This is an interesting debate, and on one hand I do agree with both Savy and Rodprof. If I could catch the quantity and quality of Fluke that I find in the deeper drops in shallower water I would certainly prefer that. However, I am a realist and have also seen the shift in preferred habitats...
In some ways my own "evolution" when it comes to Fluke fishing tackle was similar to Lep's. As a kid I began Fluking in the shallow west end bays and quickly moved east to the Moriches/Hampton Bays area where very shallow water and light current really was a natural for spinning tackle. Also, in...
Regarding the North Fork yards, I have been out to my boat twice in the past 10 days and here are my observations. Most of the yards, including mine, Brick Cove Marina, did shut down operations as of last Sunday. Just to the west, Port of Egypt was also closed but Albertson's Marine, right next...
Hi George,
We had discussed ways to research this vessel and it's talented Captain. I mentioned articles by the old favorite from the LIF, Matt Ahern. I checked my stash of old issues but only had a few with articles by Matt and none referred to the White Eagle. Of course I have the one nearly...
While it seems that currently many of these "old time" rigs have been fine tuned, there is no doubt in my mind that these set ups would still catch fish today in the hands of a skilled angler. My only concern he would be the use of "cat gut" leaders and "cord" which I assume refers to the older...
This a great piece of history and when you realize the Captain's of this era had virtually no electronics to find their "hotspots" it really proves what great navigators they were. On a clear day they could use shore ranges (still no easy task) but when visibility was limited they had to be...
During the summer months I run a number of charter trips to the Montauk/Block Island area so this does impact me directly.
Two years ago when I first learned of this project I started investigating and also attended a couple of the public input sessions held at East Hampton Town Hall. The first...
Funny you should mention Ling. I have been fishing the North Fork/Peconic Bay system for over 50 years and on last Wednesday's trip a friend also caught 2 small Ling near Claudios. I have certainly caught my share in the ocean but never in the bay. Pretty wild!
