Excellent eeling with Captain Hugh Chancey in Montauk. We started with light's out diamond jigging for sea bass, keeping 3. Also cod, porgies, mackerel, sea robins, bluefish, and a 16" blackfish.
Once the tide turned, out came the eels, and we had hookups on almost each drift, with fish pushing 40#
Diamond jigging is a fun way to catch bass, especially when they're mostly overs. Hugh Chancy put us on the fish to 30+ pounds, including a slot limit and too many thrown back to keep track of. Unfortunately, the most exciting catch of the day turned out to be a 20# bass foul hooked right behind...
I had to see for myself. Shout out to Phil at Cow Harbor for helping with the where and the what. His advice was spot on.
So I made the trek all the way to Smithtown Bay and the reports are accurate. Once we found the sand eels, we found the fluke. As many fluke as we wanted. Only one keeper...
It's been a nice start to the season in the extreme west pursuing the rare and endangered striped bass.
I've managed a few bass every trip, but have yet to land the elusive lottery fish in the magical 28-31 slot.
Yesterday was my first time chunking this year. I must have had 6-7 short runs...
We had a very productive day aboard Tall Tailz out of Newport on Monday. Mine went 9 lbs. as my biggest tog of the year. We also had a 7 and some 4's and 5's. If your goal is the biggest tog possible, Tall Tailz' Captain Conner is focused on making sure your equipment, leader and drag are up to...
minutes. All on diamond jigs.
Tuesday was a banner day on Chancey Charters. We passed by the fleet and found all the bass we wanted on diamond jigs- unders, overs, and a slot limit in about 10 minutes. When we got tired of bailing bass, we made a few drops for blackfish without traveling too...
Had a great trip with two of my fishing buddies despite the stiff NW breeze. about 20 feet deep. They bit till the greens and asians were gone. Easy double limit but we only kept a few.
My buddy Bob has a friend Henry who lives near Newport. He's a member of Freedom Boat Club. He's a boater, not a fisherman. Bob convinced Henry that if we came up, we could show him how to catch blackfish. Henry told us the boats have downscan and sidescan. We were supposed to leave out of Pt...
My buddie Wayne and I had an epic trip with Capt. Hugh Chancey, Chancey Charters.
We diamond jigged a ton of sea bass and porgies as we waited for the sun to set, then great bass action.
One didn't make it, and this 40+ fish looks like someone took a nibble of its tail on the way up!
I'm never good at keeping fish counts, but I definitely had over 20 bass, prob over 30, to 20+ pounds, in a half day of diamond jigging on @ChanceyCharters with Capt. Hugh Chancey. A few giant blues, a few sea bass and some tray size porgies came up as well. One teen size bass had a big patch...
The season has been good. I've trolled a bunch of overs, but trolling Mojo's is not my favorite way to catch bass. Tuesday morning was slow, but I finally found them at just about quitting time. After putting a few in the boat I noticed they were pretty stacked in the same spot and switched to a...
Some folks are on another level. My buddy Joe felt so positive about his years with FDNY, that when he retired, instead of soliciting thanks, he felt he needed to "give back" and has been volunteering at a summer camp for child burn victims. Having worked on "the pile" he was so grateful that...
Went out on the Miss Montauk on a windy Monday. Constant action all day. Just gulp, just bait, or a combination all seemed to be working around the boat.
I had a bunch of shorts and maybe 7 or 8 keeper size, while looking for that big one.
Great trip, boat and mates.
Captain Jamie runs a tight...
My 20 something daughter enjoys fishing now and then, and she does love my fish tacos. She was home over the weekend, so I offered to take her porgie fishing as a prelude to her desired lunch.
Just as we settled into position over some rocks near Prospect Point and were getting some taps from...
Fished opening day with Capt. Rich Tenrerero, now of Pt. Judith. Constant action all day on jigs by those sneaky crab stealers for a full boat limit and a big trigger, then we finished the morning with a few striped bass overs and a lottery slot.
I've certainly lost more hooks this year to bluefish than ever before. I eventually switched over to braided wire. I can't say I am entirely unhappy by the return of consistent bluefish action with large fish in my shallow and deep bass spots since early May. Hopefully it lasts after the bass...
Fished three very different spots yesterday morning searching for stripers with live bunker and chunks. Bluefish in all of them. The large size, where when you try to swing them in or just hold their heads out of the water during unhooking, your 80# mono leader parts, even if you can see the...
I had a fun day of chunking a few days ago. Plenty of old slot size bass and the first daytime bluefish bite I've had in years. I eventually had to switch to wire, as I was losing too many hooks.
Most of the blues were 10#+, with the largest hitting 16 on the Boga. I think the competition from...
So where are the bunker? Not in Manhasset Bay, which is loaded with peanuts(?) Odd for this time of year. I noticed some big schools of adults mid-sound, in very deep water, and moving fast, but not even snagable. Forget about a cast net. I resorted to buying bunker (thanks Jack's) for the first...
