One Last Run Before Hauling Out, Bacala Bonanza!!

My September and October schedule has been crazy with trips, while the wind continued to blow when I was home. I decided that I was getting out this AM come hell or high water, as my schedule, and the weather man, dictates hauling the boat out on Thursday or Friday, whichever one is not pouring...

    Double Unicorn Trip

Was aching to catch something so I went out for Cod C&R yesterday. Cod aren't really unicorns around here, but I did get a hint for another unicorn. Ran out 2 nearshore cod humps in hopes of finding something to tug. Ended up catching over a dozen cod, 4 being of keeper size to 11 lbs if...

Another look at the Chesapeake Spawning Failure...

Well, I know most of us Mainers are having a "challenging" season. Was bored silly today with the rain, and decided to evaluate how bad it has been. Well, it's F-ing HORRIBLE. This is an historical summary of the last 6 seasons for when the bass start biting in May through June 28...

    Philosophical Question

Philosophical Question Yesterday was destined to be an "off" day considering it the On Again/Off Again bite as of late, and it certainly did not disappoint, me nor two other colleagues. Between the 3 of us, there were 9 or 10 disinterested follow the plug events and one brief hookup. In my...

Finally, the 2025 Midcoast Maine Striper Report

Well after 10 days of dawn fishing trips, along with quite a few evenings too, along with the occasional mid-day run to boot, I finally shed the demons this evening with a 26". Today's dawn patrol was 1 brief hookup, along with another hit and a follow. I also dropped another one this evening...

Midcoast Maine May 15 - 25 Striper Report, been fishing but...

Best summed up by "A Loon Talking To A Loon" Long story short: I've been out at least once per day, often twice with the occasional triple, since May 15 targeting stripers, and it's been Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah!! Not a single hookup, hit, blow up on the plug or even follow. Haven't seen a bass break...

Sometimes AI is a scary funny or is that a funny scary??!!

My biggest gripe with this first generation of AI is best summed up as overstatement of the obvious. Now that the search engines routinely plop down the AI answer for the first response to the search, I've programmed my brain to totally ignore that. Well today's AI result shows a bit more I in...

Garmin Radar Error Code 6 - Inadequate Voltage, anyone have any clues?

Learned Colleagues: I splashed Monday, hooked up the Garmin GPSMap 4212 and fired up everything, including the radar, and all was good on my trip from the boatyard to home. Went out on Thursday and after things hazed up, I flipped on the Radar and got an Error Code 6. When I got back to the...

It's ALWAYS a learning experience; out of boredom, did some C&R Cod Jigging...

History dictates that I have at least 10 days before I'm into those striped fish, with 2 weeks being more likely. Yesterday was the first rainless one in a long time and since the lawn is soaked, cutting the grass was out of the question. What to do?? Throw the cod rods into the boat and do...

    Fish ID???

These 1" long fish were seen this AM on all of the patches of the green sea weed I saw as I walked to my shellfishing spot this AM. They were alive and would react if poked. Since I live on a tidal river that has a significant elver fishery I'm wondering if they're really small elvers, as the...

Even hard shell clams (quahogs, cherrystone, little necks, chowders, etc.) aren't immune from green crabs.

Check out the chipping along this cherrystone. That is work of a green crab trying to have dinner. Looks like it gave up. If they can chew up hard shells, imagine what they do to soft shells, mussels, razors, and oysters, which have much thinner shells around their "mouth"!!

Maine's 100 buoy losses are miniscule considering the 1000s being removed along the coast!!

Here's an interactive map to see which buoys near you are being considered for removal: Where's My Buoy?? WARNING - That map has errors. It has Buoy 11 off of Port Jefferson marked, but clicking on it, it comes up as Port Chester Buoy. Since none of the other Eastern North Shore Cans, 9, 7, 5...
