Starting August 1, 2024, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is set to revolutionize the way sporting licenses and carcass tags are issued. Moving away from the traditional synthetic paper, the DEC will now utilize plain paper for all state sporting licenses, including those for hunting, trapping, and fishing. This pivotal change aims to simplify and expedite the license acquisition process, catering to the growing trend of online purchases among the sporting community.

Key Takeaways:

  • Transition to Plain Paper: The DEC is shifting from synthetic to plain paper for sporting licenses and tags, facilitating easier and quicker printing.
  • Benefits of the Change: Highlighted by DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos, this move aims to streamline the process for obtaining licenses, reduce the state's carbon footprint, and leverage emerging technologies.
  • Enhanced Flexibility: The new system allows for immediate printing upon purchase, email delivery, or traditional in-person pickup. The HuntFishNY mobile app also supports electronic display of licenses in the field.
  • Effective Date: The change takes effect for the 2024-25 license year, starting with sales on August 1, 2024. Lifetime license holders will receive their documents by mail by September 1, 2024.
  • Exclusions: The spring 2024 turkey season will not be affected by this update.

Detailed Insights:

Streamlined Licensing Process

DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos emphasized the streamlined process for sportsmen and women to access their necessary documents. The switch not only promises a reduction in the state's carbon footprint but also positions New York at the cutting edge of technology within the wildlife management sector. The decision comes as a response to the challenges and costs associated with securing synthetic paper, a hurdle faced by many fish and wildlife agencies nationwide.

Flexibility and Convenience

The new system offers enhanced flexibility for license holders, allowing options such as printing licenses and tags immediately upon purchase, receiving them via email, or opting for traditional in-person acquisition. Furthermore, the HuntFishNY mobile app will enable hunters and anglers to display their licenses electronically while in the field, streamlining the game reporting process.

For additional information and updates on this significant shift, the DEC encourages customers to visit their website, where a detailed Q&A section is available, and to subscribe to DEC Delivers. For more details, visit the DEC website at DEC's official website.

This update marks a significant milestone in New York State's efforts to modernize and improve the hunting and fishing license issuance process, making it more accessible, efficient, and environmentally friendly for the sporting community."

Yes the Q and A does cover tagging a deer or bear. We no longer have to tag the animal immediately upon harvest but can do so after dragging it back to the truck. It "recommends" placing the the tag in a baggie to further safeguard flimsy paper.

what is not said is that they (Albany) save money so they can give more migrants gift cards.

I simply can not imagine the amount of fraud that will go on. Hey, anyone want to buy a license ? Buy one and get a free covid vaccination card !!

Great points!

You already see the fraud with all of these out of state temporary license plates on cars that are purchased online.....

So if I'm reading your reply correctly, you have to tag before loading in truck. But can you drag to house and tag there?

Seems so. Open the link. Its covered in questions 6 through 8.
this has been true for years about tagging the deer. but beware! when you shoot your harvest, before you dress it out, you are required to fill out the tag first. Bringing your harvest to its point of transport without a completely filled out tag, is no different than shooting it without a license. The fines are large and you will lose your harvest.

So the 2024/2025 are on sale, Make before you start that your password to log on to DEC is still good myself and a few friends had to reset before starting. You will print your license when you are done and check out. No more back tags it's not required anywhere in New York. Your license is on paper now, so sip lock bag it and keep it dry. Good luck and be safe

I printed out extra copies of the license (lifetime) and tags and replaced last year's backtag with them. I always had done this with the backtag as I put one in a vest, another in my backpack, and a third in my coat's backtag holder.
