Shark Spotted In Penniman Creek In Quogue Saturday Morning

A 10- to 12-foot shark was spotted swimming in Penniman Creek on Saturday morning, Quogue Police reported.

Quogue Police Lieutenant Daniel Hartman said that his department responded to a call from someone at the Shinnecock Yacht Club who saw the shark of the reported length swimming in the creek.

Southampton Town Bay Constables had been monitoring its location since it was spotted at 9:07 a.m. in Penniman Creek, a shallow inlet in Quogue at the westernmost end of Shinnecock Bay, Lt. Hartman said. Southampton Town Police sent out a drone for an aerial view of its movement.

The town's bay constables and police lost track of the shark in the early afternoon in the western part of Shinnecock Bay, Lt. Hartman said. The drone eventually ran out of battery and bay constables could no longer spot it from their boat, he said.

"We don't see a need for public concern right now but we need to keep people aware that it is out there," the lieutenant said.

The shark species had not been identified.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back swimming. :( Sadly I haven’t swum in the ocean since I read the book Jaws. Scared the crap out of me.

For those of you that aren't completely familiar with the local area here where that it is, it is off of the Quogue Canal and is a pretty good run from both Shinnecock and Moriches Inlets. Whichever way it came from its a good run from either inlet which means it covered lots of ground in the shallow waters of either Shinnecock or Moriches bays.

I'm thinking I'm gonna be very close attention the next time I jump in the water to go clamming:eek::oops::unsure::whistle::p
