Albies & Bones

Anybody seeing any signs of false albacore or bonito moving W towards Western L.I. Debs or Rockaway Inlets? My friends & I are anxiously awaiting their return to the N Y Bight. We've only seen small blues (2-4lbs) on schools of tiny rain bait (1.5-2") all over the place. It can't be much longer.....I hope.

I target them from the shore and I can comfortably say
the bulk of them are not in range. I also see the silver
sides, not spearing and the cocktail blues are incredibly
fixed on them. It's such a small bait. The size of half a
pinky and girth of a toothpick. When I'm wading I see
the blues dashing by from side to side chasing the tiny
silver sides. Very few are interested in my offering.
I hope this helps and good luck.

By silversides, do you mean bay anchovies?
Last Thursday the blues spit up the 1.5-2" spearing. No bay anchovies.

Last Fall, on several trips, we had albies busting out of the water, with sprays of bay anchovies all around the boat. We were just off the Shrewsbury Rocks. The water was very clear and we could see the slight tint of pink in the water from the shoals of anchovies. It was like a Nature Channel show. My buddy and I caught and released over 25 albies that day on small pink epoxy jigs.

I just purchased a pack of 6 - AVA 005's. They are about 1.5" long and cast well on light spinner with 10lb braid.
BTW, I just saw some Reports from Captree PBs that showed good catches of albies and bones. I hope they continue to move West.

This is a Bay Anchovy.
