Yesterday’s trip found myself and Kevin (Longcast) along with his son, Kevin, looking for Bass, east end style. Conditions were not appropriate for the flood at Plum Gut, so we opted for the Race on the ebb tide.
My local intel said it was a tough go on the weekend due to a lot of boat traffic and slow tides. Thankfully the traffic was down but we did have to wait until about an hour into the ebb before the drift picked up enough to get the Bass feeding. With the small crew I got to wet a line early on, using my new secret weapon, some exquisite handmade bucktails courtesy of Bob Skinner! I immediately went 3 for 3 on the first productive drifts, putting one slot fish in the box. Then Kevin Sr. got on board with a fish his own while also dropping another good one about halfway up. I too landed another Bass a couple of drifts later but now the south breeze freshened just enough to mess up the natural drift.
So, we move to plan B as I power drifted to get a better presentation on the bucktails. Proved to be a good move as both Kevin’s hooked up on the first pass with one more slot fish in the mix. Action was a little bit slow the rest of the morning but ultimately, we boated 9 Bass and one Blue for our efforts. And Kevin Jr. wound up beating out his Dad with a final score of 3 Bass to 2! Excellent showing for his first time pulling the 3 ways.
