Captain's Table - Elusive Peconic Fluke

Yesterday’s full day Fluke charter in the Peconic’s found Kevin and his 3 friends Nicki, Virigina, and Lam join me. Although my records from prior years indicate this should be prime time for local Fluke we continue to struggle, at least in this area.

A very steady North breeze made fishing one of my favored spots near the dock impossible. Moved farther east where at least wind and tide were more cooperative. Here we did find several Fluke on one drift line over the course of about 90 minutes but unfortunately all were short. Tried one deep drop nearby, based on some local intel, but found only hungry dogs on this drop. Tried one last “Hail Mary” for Fluke further west but once again a poor drift with wind vs. tide only produced a few birds.

So, to salvage our trip I moved further south to the Weakfish grounds and found the schools still there and happy to accommodate. For the last 2 hours of the day, we had steady action boating 18 Weaks with 4 keepers to 3.5#. And it seems my prayer was finally answered when Nicki gets a big hit and after a good struggle lands a nice 5# Fluke stuck to her diamond jig! Thankfully the crew was able to go home with some nice fresh fish for the table.

Back to Bass fishing next week and if the late start on most species in the Peconic’s this year is any indication then perhaps we will see an uptick in local Fluke action as well. As usual in the fishing game determination and persistence are the keys to success!
