Well-Known Angler
Ran another “small crew” charter to Montauk yesterday for long term loyal customers John and Ricky. After last week’s back-to-back solid trips to the south side our starting location was obvious.
Within minutes of lines down Ricky pulls a nice 18.5” Sea Bass and follow almost immediately with a beautiful Fluke tipping the scales just shy of 7#. The steady 10-12 kt. Breeze pushed the drift faster than our bucktails could hold so over went the drift sock combined with a switch to chicken rigs to maintain contact with the bottom. For the next 3 hours we had consistent Fluke and Sea Bass action on every drift. Only problem was 90% of the Fluke were shorts accompanied by mixed sized Sea Bass. We did manage to pull one more 5# Fluke and another 19” keeper along with more 17-18” Sea Bass for the box.
Starting to run short on time I decided to try a few deeper drops at the 100’ depths that have been very good to me over the years. Unfortunately, we found the same pattern with some short Fluke, a Ling, a Whiting, and a few more keeper Sea Bass. Finished up he day just little shallower. While I was cleaning the catch the guys finally found two more nice Fluke in the 3-4# range and they filled out the boat limit on Sea Bass.
So, despite a frustrating day for me with well over 40 Fluke landed and only 5 keepers when you add in the Sea Bass the guys still had a great time fishing and went home with healthy bags of filet.
Next Montauk adventure is this coming Thursday 7/27 with one spot still open. Just give me a call if you want to climb aboard.
