Well-Known Angler
After enjoying summer like conditions for my shakedown cruise on Monday I just knew I would have to pay the price during today's maiden voyage.
I was intent on getting to Jessups right around sunrise to fish the end of the flood and start of the ebb tide knowing the Bass are in the bay. I was greeted by breezy, foggy, damp, and downright chilly conditions for most of the day. Although I marked plenty of Bass on the sonar they seemed to have lockjaw this morning. Flutter Spoons, bucktails, and even diamond jigs all came up empty for me today.
So, as the Ebb started to gain strength, I headed west o set up shop on the normally reliable Spring Peconic Scup run. Chum pot goes down and almost immediately I land a couple of small fish followed by a double header of keepers. However, the bite then slowed down to a scratchy pick for the next hour before dying out completely. No worries, I already had 6 nice fish in the box and plenty of time to work.
Back to a favorite drop east of Jessups where I normally slay them. However, 45 minutes time here and all I had to show for the effort was a bit of seaweed! Next on to another solid drop further north and here once the chum took hold, I again had a steady bite for the next hour. I culled about 6 more nice fish from the bunch and could have limited myself but still the bite was kind of short lived.
Since I am running a kid's trip on the Orient Star tomorrow I made a few more scouting drifts in the immediate vicinity and did find life on each pass. So, the Scup are definitely present but the all-out insane bite we have been spoiled with for many years will probably need a few more days of settled weather to take hold. Regardless, it was still great to finally get out and bend the rod! More great days are on the horizon!!
