Captain's Table Veteran's Day Tog

First a big and thankful salute to all of our Veteran's! You have kept America strong as it always should be!!

I had the Al party of “spirited senior citizens” out with me yesterday for some Veteran’s Day Tog action. Thankfully the strong winds and rain predicted did hold off just long enough for us to complete the trip in relative comfort.

With the ominous forecast I chose not to sail all the way east to Fishers and spent the trip closer to the north side of LI/Plum I. First drop at Mulford on what should have been a quiet stage of the tide at the very start of the flood found the current really booking. First time ever I have found an Eldridge tide prediction to seem off and the guys had to move from 12-16 oz of lead pretty quickly…ugh! Anyway, action was very steady with the typical parade of shorts and only 3 keepers to 17” finding the box.

Tried another drop on a small piece north of Orient but just couldn’t get the boat quite right and after 30 minutes of some short activity we headed east to Plum. Finished the day on one of my oldest set of reliable numbers and the bite was very consistent once again. After a lot of sorting, the crew managed to get within one fish of a full boat limit to just under 4#. No real biggies but plenty of sweet fillets to go home with the guys.

Just as we turned the corner by the Gut the SW wind began to come up and we made it back to the dock just at the first rain drops began to fall. Sure made cleanup a little easier!

Thought that was you at Mulford yesterday Capt Mike, it sure was more tide than I expected. I made a few drops, some shallow then deeper, & didn't find life in each spot. Tried a reliable 60' piece that I just couldn't get the boat over, then came back in closer. I had two keepers & a good sea bass on ice when I started to feel that S/W in my face & it was time to go, the bay was just starting to turn white when I rounded Orient, got the boat on the trailer just as it started to rain..... Eldridge doesn't do a great job off Mulford and Petty's Bight, my old Bass, Tog and Flounder environs.

AAMOF there's a back eddy there that is not in Eldridge that was a flounder hot spot, AND allowed me to help our racing sailboat win some races because the other boats, further off the beach, were faced with tide on the nose, while we had a stern push...

Hi John,
I thought that might have been you a little tighter to the beach at Mulford. While we did have pretty constant action in about 55' only the 3 keepers I mentioned for about 90m minutes effort. Had to count on the North of Plum drop to bail us out before, as you saw, the wind came on pretty strong. Glad to hear you caught some nice dinner.

Hi Roccus,
I agree there are a handful of locations where even Eldridge misses things a bit. However, what surprised me was the start of the ebb also seemed to be almost an hour earlier than published for the north side of Plum.

I was having a conversation with Capt. Dan Buckley who was fishing the same area on his private boat and had the same experience. Even more puzzling is Dan spoke with his younger brother, TJ, who was running the Orient Star yesterday along with another charter captain in our circle who were both at Fishers and saw the same thing well to the east. It was a very weird day from the tidal perspctive.
