Entangled Turtle - Suffolk County

On Sept. 1, ECOs Evan Laczi, Emma Carpenter, and Kaitlin Grady were patrolling Northport Harbor by boat when they found a large abandoned fishing net tangled around floating pilings in the town of Huntington. A diamondback terrapin was spotted entangled in the net. The officers pulled the boat close, cut the terrapin free, and released it back to the water. The Northport Harbormaster was notified about the net and arranged to have this hazard removed.

Before I left for our Viking Rhine River Cruise I helped a bay constable free an almost drowned skimmer from fishing line all around his wing and beak. The next day the bay constables told me that the bird was doing fine at a local rehab facility (presumably Tackapausha Preserve. I had never seen a skimmer up close before, much less held its beak closed. that was my good deed for the year- I will quickly revert to being an a-hole.
