Yes I fish for stripers everyday and haven't been skunked since late May so it's a given that my signature's Latin tag line is correct. However, it's been a bit of a chore catching recently, --real "Smith Barney" fishing, I "earn" every fish-- almost to the point where getting out of bed at 0Dark:30 seems like a chore and obligation. No sense boring you all with daily updates unless something interesting happens.
This AM was different and noteworthy from the Get/Go. I awoke myself at 3:33 (I never set an alarm). Well seeing that time made me know that it would be a good day as "3" is one of my lucky numbers so three, "3s" could only mean an epic day. Hopped out of bed, caffeinated myself, got dressed and "moseyed" down to the boat.
Since tide was close to high and there was no wind, I figured I need to find a spot that had active water so I decided to fish along the ocean ledges. Cleared the harbor only to be greeted by rafts of rockweed choking the shoreline.
"OK, let's do Plan B and go up to the head of the bay. Wait, look at that. There are 2 pogy (bunker) boats are headed up there, that will screw things up. But wait there's more, the rockweed harvest boat is on his way there too. ABORT, this is NG..."
"Well, what's Plan C, my third option? I could go to a neighboring river and fish in a very pleasant cove which is good at the top of the tide. Haven't tried that yet this year, WTH, what's the worst that could happen, I just burn some gas?"
Got up to the cove and was greeted by small groups of terns diving down on bait with no hint of fish under them. Stopped by a few and tossed the popper in with absolutely no interest so I proceeded up into the cove to my favorite spots. Got to the first spot and one of my first casts generated a swirl, but no fish. Kept casting with no interest.
"Hey Idiot!! This is the spot where your popper is worthless. Grab the rod rigged with the 7" Albino Fin-S on it!! That is the lure of choice here." Tossed out the lure and BAM it got hit, but no hookup. That's the problem with Fin-S rigged Texas style, lots of hits, few solid hook ups.
I've yet to get a working stinger hook rig figured out, but did manage to get 3 nice fish to 23" before the tide changed. Anyone here got ideas for that?
Figured it was time to head home with the caveat to fish the island right outside of the cove. As I approached it I noticed 50 terns sitting on a dock right near the island. Just as I got close to the rock pile I intended to fish all hell broke loose as fish started feeding with abandon with the terns off the dock and now wheeling and screaming overhead. When the bass were on top feeding, out went the popper and slammed it got. When they went down, out went the Fin-S with nice solid hits and hook ups. When the dust cleared I had 8 fish up to 25" in this "Bonus Session."
Called it a day and headed back to the barn with a Cheshire Cat Grin on my face. Golf? Why did I ever think golf could be a substitute for fishing?
