Not a Fluke - Queens County
While on patrol on July 6, ECOs Colton Garrand and Darren Milliron responded to a complaint about two people keeping a garbage bag full of summer flounder (fluke) on the North Channel Bridge of Jamaica Bay in Queens County. The ECOs discovered hidden garbage bags containing 16 fluke near the suspected poachers. The fish ranged from 10-12 inches, much smaller than the legal size of 19 inches. ECOs issued five tickets to the two individuals for violations including possession of under-sized fluke, over the limit, and failure to release without undo harm.

Do you think those fined pay up ? Nothing said about a marine registry- I doubt they had them. That is why i advocate confiscation in addition. That wasn’t a single 18 1/2” fish !

(y) to taking their gear. Is this a legal option for the officers?
I am awaiting a reply from DEC on that. Watching some of the game warden shows on TV I know in other states they can, but in Newyorkistan we treat perps like victims and probably offer them a ride home if they were dropped off at Green Island.

They should shame these guys like people that steal from grocery stores and get caught. Also, confiscation of gear would be cool also.

If you don't know that locale, its famous for, umm, "undocumented fishermen" filling buckets with anything they can catch. So I doubt there will be any fine-paying by anyone. In fact they'll probably get a citizenship award from our local NYC Pols. What a disgrace this state has become.

Sorry. No habla.

It’s a problem here in the Shinnecock area as well. These poachers sell to the local restaurants and fish market. Everyone around knows who this one guy is and he makes several trips out a day and keeps all short fish and plenty of them.

Please feel free to Shoot me a PM and give me a description of who that is so I can be on the look out when I’m out and about ?

Thanks for the info
On a side note to this topic...I grew up in the Bronx and fished mainly the western sound my whole life until I recently bought a seasonal house in the Hampton Bays a few years ago. I have made some friends that were born and raised here In the bays and I have met some transplants from Queens and the boroughs. What I have noticed which is really shocking to me , is I experience more people out here that let’s say “bend the rules“ as far as fish quotas/ size restrictions go then the “Cityits “ as we are commonly referred to. I was under the assumption that if you grew up in Seaside communities that you had a greater respect for the ocean and it’s inhabitants ,than the people that did not live in the area. And please do not misunderstand me , this does not mean that people from the urban areas that flock to the water to fish do not poach also. This is just my personal observation that I have made coming from a different background with a small sample size .

Sore subject for us locals for sure Occh
As someone who grew up here I can assure you I am NOT a local who bends the rules.
Whether I agree with rules or not I follow them.
As far as the peeps you think are regularly breaking the rules, I trust you know there are several guys in the hampton bays/shinny area that are commercial pin hookers??? They are legally fishing with a hook and line in the bay with different regs.

I am somebody that openly and regularly uses the term "city-its". It's just the way it is.
No disrespect to you whatsoever.
So long as the out of town so called fisherman continue to line the jetty's of the shinnecock canal, while parking illegally, fishing with no licenses, filling their pails with whatever they pull in regardless of size or species, illegally camping overnight, and leaving mountains of garbage behind, you are fighting an absolute losing battle of pitting locals verse city its....

Same goes here too. Many of the locals firmly believe that it's their right to bend the rules...

"Dom, you just got to keep a 26" stripeah once in a while!"

glad it’s not only me that noticed.
I can see that sort of territorial privilege you mention.
