Just an innocent question, but are we going to be able to post reports with a little more in the way of specifics than that "other" website allowed ?
Hell, its usually yesterday's news anyway ! I catch so little from the surf, fishing daytime and only with lures, that I am mostly just posting conditions LOL.

Curious if any official told you it would be open? Right now when you get your 4x4 permit they are saying Gilgo is closed with no expected reopening date. Would be great to have it back but I'm not too hopeful.

"For the first time in three years, surfers and fisherman will be able to drive off-road vehicles at Gilgo State Park, starting April 1, officials said Friday, as the severely eroded beach now has been replenished.

Gilgo was closed to anyone not on foot because the Atlantic had washed away most of the sand from previous dredging programs, narrowing the beach to a thin strip, imperiling Ocean Parkway and exposing the foundations of a Coast Guard station abandoned since the 1920s.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers paid a dredger approximately $26 million to pour about 2.1 million yards of sand onto Gilgo and nearby local beaches.

“The fishing community and the surfers are thrilled because it is such a popular location. It gives them the ability to drive right onto the beach to enjoy their sport,” said George Gorman, Long Island deputy regional director of the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

The sand was dredged this winter from Fire Island Inlet, which lies to the east and which routinely traps sand that otherwise would flow along the shore, Mother Nature’s way of replacing the sand storms rob.

The project also protects Ocean Parkway; last spring officials found that the sea had engulfed so much of the beach that just 36 feet separated it from the road.

That heightened the risk that a storm would cleave Jones Beach Island in two, officials have said. The parkway is the island's main east-west artery.

Off-road drivers must buy permits from the state parks department. The fee is $80 for in-state vehicles and $125 for out-of-state vehicles. The permits will be sold until March 31, officials said, and then sales resume the Tuesday after Labor Day until Dec. 31. "

Amen. Will be nice to have more access but I wonder how many more passes will be sold because of the article.

I am hoping they "build a wall" on Gilgo's western border. Just sayin'. Maybe when I get older than 68 I will think twice about walking "all the way" from the parking lot the couple hundred feet to the beach... Thank God they will never off-road at Jones Beach as well.

Mr 'know it all ' way back when ... Never aired down my 4 x4 pickup , took a ride east on Gilgo , buried the truck to the chassis with three kids and a very nervous wife ... Good Sam passed by asked for my tow rope ,, he sighed when I told him I didn't have one , pulled out his and yanked me out .....
Air to 15b lbs nowadays , two compressors , etc ,etc ......

We are trying to keep "spot burning" to an absolute minimum. Posts should never include exact locations rather general areas like "Western South Shore" or East End.

If we can give up front what is meant by these vague definitions (such as Central south shore is from Jones INlet to FI inlet, and post it as a stickee, that's fine with me. I never did find out on the other "dead" website where Long Beach or West End (JBSP) or Gilgo fit in. What I would like is as I said before; sweep, weed, any action and by what species. Current wind and surf height can be obtained on the weather sites. Otherwise, why bother ? I don't read any of the party boat "reports" and there was such a paucity of surf and private boater reports the last five or six years on that other dead website that I basically stopped clicking on it and just read Lep and Rich on their respective discussion boards.

I like it as vague as possible. Leave central south shore to the imagination.

Vague, huh. So, arrived at the town beach at 7am with the last of the outgo, started casting 1 oz white bucktails with chartreuse Gulp teasers over the chest high surf with only a moderate east to west sweep amid a 7 kt. NE wind. Sunny, mid 50s. No weed, only a few birds out at the bar. First hit was 53 yards west of the westernmost underpass but only after switching to a Kastmaster with a white bucktail and a white and red teaser on a plain hook 13" above it. Many retrieves came back with an impaled sand flea. That first fish and seven more 75 and 125 yards west of said underpass took that Kastmaster as well. All schoolies, all quickly released. Bite was over by 10am. Sorry, I do not believe in "look at me!" photos, especially for shorts. (Not that anyone would have any idea where I was...)
