After some BB gunning, I made the Massapequa High rifle team and then the varsity team at Hofstra. Commissioned there through ROTC in ’73, my only association with small arms shooting thereafter was qualifying annually with M16s and .45 cal. and 9mm pistols with my artillery unit, aside from some target shooting with air guns. After retiring from the USAR, I missed shooting and in 2003 started a modest gun collection, later adding hunting and obtaining a pistol license. I have just been utilizing public shooting ranges; Mitchel in Uniondale and the Calverton shooting range. With a military ID and now as a senior citizen, Mitchel has always been quite inexpensive for me. Although I had thought about reloading for its economic and hobby benefits, I realized that archery, hunting, kayaking and fishing would limit the time I would spend reloading and never got involved in it, just saving my brass for trade.
My hunting “habit” started with my mentor and former battalion commander, who passed away the month I fully retired in 2011, but was there to talk me through field dressing my first deer in 2010. I have never hunted waterfowl and disliking duck as dinner, never will. I only kill what I eat, (excepting the occasional sea robin. lol.) I am presently deer hunting on a limited nuisance permit out east which is quite doable for myself and hunting partner, who is even older than I. I have hunted the DEC properties in central Suffolk as well. Once one has a dogeared Medicare card, dragging a deer miles through the woods and throwing it up into a pickup is not as easy as it once was and despite the myriad of regulations and required phone calls on the permit, it has worked out well for us. Fortunately, it turns out the better half LOVES venison. With occasional dizziness or vertigo, treestands are a no go, so ground blinds and posting up are the methods utilized by us. The permit is basically shotgun only and hunters are somewhat vetted.
I know little about NYC gun laws, except that they are stricter than they are here in East “Bloombergistan.” I am quite familiar with Cuomo’s draconian SAFE Act and have frequently chimed in on longislandfirearms.com and longislandgunclub.com which may be where some alleged “rumors” of my enthusiasm for firearms came from. (Do I “owe” one of you for this mod recommendation ?) My “go-to” gunshops are T&T in Seaford, where I somehow hit it off with the irascible Marty, and South Shore in Merrick (ask for Stan or Mike!) However I usually take advantage of online ammo sales which contrary to what seems to be a common belief, can still ship to your porch although most won’t out of fear of NY’s gun gestapo. I know I should spend my money locally but I am part Scot and a true piker! My modest collection is all “shooters,” being cheap (Scandinavian besides Scot heritage !) and not investing in “heirloom safe queens.” I enjoy shooting my Henry .22s as much as my AR-15, M1 carbine or any of my pistols, my favorite being the CZ-75 carried at one time by half of Europe. I stink at trap and shoulder issues have eliminated archery and anything with heavy recoil for now. I also admit selling half of my semi-auto rifles just before SAFE, and I think now with a democrat state senate, they may all need to be registered, if not all but prohibited. Maybe the FUDDs will finally vote. One can thank the states that have no gun control at all, and thus indirectly foster illegal gun running, and the states that do not report mental defectives to the national databases, for all the 2nd Amendment restrictions.
I think it’s fair to say that many members herein will have much more experience and larger “arsenals” than I. I will be requesting a lot of guidance, advice and opinions of others. I do not want to be seen as “blowing smoke” but I will also not refrain from posting opinions. As with anuses, everyone has one. I truly hope that I will be able to contribute to what seems to be shaping up as a fine website already. As for my avatar, tough noogies, it stays for now !
