Noticed the river temp last night was an amazing 61°F on outgoing, compared to the ocean's 47°F temps and the Devil popped up on my shoulder, "Go for it!! You know the alewives are running, and so the stripers are probably just below the head of tide!"
Of course I succumbed to the Dark Side and saddled, knowing full well that there was a chance of high winds and rain. Started fishing by the head of tide, but after 5 min, there was a rumble of thunder and the wind shifted so I high-tailed it back to the barn and just beat the cloudburst. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
This morning began with zero wind, although the AM weatherman was warning it was going to get windy. Once again, Lucifer popped up on my shoulder with a, "Look out there it's a sheet of glass!" which was all I needed to hear so off I went again. Water temp had dropped overnight to 51°F, still good for spring bass so I decided to try a blind cove just off of the head of tide. Just as I got set up, Aeolus unleashed a gale, and then "IT Happened!!", a swirl around my popper which triggered a group of fish to scatter. So there I was totally confused. Was it a bass that swirled at my plug and that noise caused a group of nearby alewives to take off or did my plug scare an alewife, and his reaction set off the rest of his group.
Unfortunately the wind made things unfishable so I had to head home, and had one hell of a time tying up because of the wind. I did text my "across the river neighbor" and told him to fish from his leeward dock late ebb to see if "they" have arrived and answer my question. Turns out that my striped nemesis haven't arrived yet, he fished for 30 minutes without a touch...
Oh yeah, if it's calm tomorrow AM I'll be back at it. Some people never learn...
