How prepared is the Coast Guard for an oil spill off Long Island ?

I see a whole bunch of tankers and freighters anchored outside Jones Inlet about 4 miles out and wonder what would happen if 2 tankers collided and spilled a huge amount of oil during Incoming tide /South wind. The Bays would be flooded with oil.
So why are they allowed to congregate in large #'s out there so close to an Inlet ???

We noticed those ships early in the fluke season. They all seem to be cargo ships. This is happening all around the country as we struggle to get the supply line moving.

I have counted as many as twenty south of jones at one time ..saw two get very close at one point,,and a couple anchor up inshore of our inshore reefs...good news is that we have a sandy bottom & dont think running a ground would cause a spill..

bad news is if it does happen and the oil works its way to our inlets ..CG would most likely close them to traffic,,destroy our beaches , fish & wild life...and the oil would be on the bottom for many many years..

The oil from BP spill in the GOM is still there ...Now we have a pipeline spill off the CA coast killing birds & fish ,,,

Really got to stop with the GOM abbreviations. For folks in New England, that's the Gulf of Maine, NOT Gulf of Mexico. Yes, I know BP was Gulf of Mexico, but some might not...

A spill anywhere is catastrophic! Surprisingly, the Northport pipeline has been relatively "event" free.....

It wouldn't be difficult closing off Jones Inlet with Containment Booms ( whatever they're called ), you wonder if the Coast Guard Stations have them and can quickly seal off the Inlet and stop a lot of the oil floating near the surface.

when was the last time you went through Jones Inlet...all the breakers ..The boom wouldn't last a day..

Just think of the velocity of the currents going through the inlets and how fast a spill can spread.

Makes you wonder with all the budget cuts of the last 10 years (especially the coast guard) how much $$ is actually allocated to that kind of disaster!

Besides we could "what if" forever. That goes for just about everything. We've never had such a tragedy and there's no reason to think we will now.

There's also some fake news in here, which I won't address, but anyone that doesn't get everything from wind to solar to whatever "green" energy there is, "Big Oil" is funding it. They are a much bigger part of the green energy movement than most realize. So the truth is Big Oil will get bigger in the decades ahead. Maybe they'll be called Big Green! It will be fine for them to make money then.

and all you have to do is take a ride up the Hudson or go over one of the bridges from queens to the Bronx and see them off loading to barges that line the Hudson River...

Imagine that. All of this mayhem of tankers and not a single incident. At the same time they're going to be shutting down the block island wind farms to repair stress cracks in the turbines. It's slated to be down for months. I guess theyll be started up those fuel burning generators.

I don't think wind farms are bad. I just don't think they're ready for 20 miles offshore in the Northeast. They came even get them to work right off of Block.

Humm ask the fisherman off the coast of Ca. if they agree or all the fisherman in the gulf of Mexico after BP spill ,,How many got welfare checks because of it ?

and how many fish were killed or fisherman shutdown from Block Island windmills ?

and now that OPEC & American oil wont increase supply to keep up with demand..have to make back the billions lost during the world shutdown i guess

You're slowly but surely sucking me into a political debate. But I'm not taking the bait. Now we're bringing opec into it. Wouldn't it be great if we were still energy independent?

More fish are killed in the Gulf from red and blue/green tide than anything else. Nothing has ever, or will ever come close. There were no welfare checks handed out, you're just parroting what you hear. There's zero truth to it. Every time there's any type of disaster involving water or hurricanes all related businesses are hurt.

And you're correct in that no fish are being killed while the Block Island Wind Mills standstill. I can't think of anyone that's suggested they hurt fishing - aside from coms dragging. The point is they want to run hundreds of them 20-miles offshore in some of the toughest weather conditions in the nation. They should first figure out how to get this small 1/2 dozen or so inshore small windmills to work before they attempt such a huge undertaking.

we were never energy independent..the oil that we frack is low grade & needs sweet crude to be blended with it so we can refine it into fuel...

and if we were ..why so many tankers from the middle east anchored up off Jones all these years ?
