Making Squid Strips - Japanese-Style!

For the past 4-5 years I have been getting all of my squid from a nearby Korean Market. The squid tubes come cleaned, frozen and packaged in sets of 5. This stuff works great by us, and also out on Pete's deep drops. Living near flushing, there are no shortage of Asian markets, and they all carry this stuff. I have a small box freezer at my house and I usually by it 30 pounds at a time. I typically bring 2 packs a trip and bring one home. They usually stay frozen all day if I keep them in a cooler over ice.

I’m actually in the process of creating my own squid strips that are colored and will be able to stay on the hook longer than traditional squid strips. They will be all natural. Probably going to start production next month and will send out test packs to you guys for feedback.

We get the big Humbolt squid here some years in Southern California. I thought they would make the best strip baits ever until I fished them. Nothing and I mean nothing would touch them. Even rockfish fished at 350' wouldn't touch them. If I put on normal market squid I got bit instantly on every drop. I tried them Mako fishing as well and I've never gotten so much as a bite.

They also taste awful. They have a horrid ammonia taste that almost tastes like to much lemon. The taste is lessened if you remove the inner and out membrane that line the meat and soak them but it's still there. Lots of restaurants here serve "Calamari Steaks". If you see that your getting humbolt.

Interesting. It looks like it would taste excellent. Then again, looks can be deceiving :)

I used to fish for them and blue claws off the docks when I was in Montauk. Still try for crabs off the docks where I am now, but never tried for squid in RI. There are a couple of well known places near Newport, but from what I hear it's a zoo. I might give it a try off the state marina this spring.

I remember when I was a googan, - face it, we were all googans at some point - I jigged one up while tuna fishing having no clue it was going to shoot me with ink!

About a decade ago there were dozens of videos uploaded on that humboldt squid run...seems like they vanished?

Interesting that they make bad bait...I wonder if they smell like danger to fish.
