Coast Guard searching for missing person off coast of Fire Island, NY

United States Coast Guard officials said Thursday morning they are searching for an individual off the coast of Fire Island, New York, after receiving an emergency broadcast just after midnight Thursday, USCG Northeast said.

The emergency broadcast came in approximately 25 miles southeast of the island “with no additional information,” the Coast Guard said. An HC-144 plane and MH-60 helicopter were “immediately launched” from Air Station Cape Cod to respond to the incident, according to officials.

“Aircrew reported a white cooler, oil sheen, and other debris,” Coast Guard officials said. “Station Shinnecock also launched a 47-foot motor lifeboat. During their search of the area, they recovered one survivor with significant injuries. Air Station Atlantic City conducted a medevac of this individual to expedite higher level care.”

But one individual remains missing and is reportedly wearing a lifejacket, according to the Coast Guard. Cutters Kingfish and Sanibel and Air National Guard aircraft were en route to assist in the search, Coast Guard official said just before 9:30 a.m.

Search called off yesterday. Other sites report the boat was called the Nordbay, was a Duffy (thought they were all electric, whatever), and collided with a freighter or tanker and went down in under 30 minutes. Survivor was hanging on to a cooler. All on board (2?) reportedly had PFDs but no survival suits. Water temperature in mid to low 60s. RIP

Damn that sucks

There was a memorial the other night. Some folks hung buoys at his slip.

Spoke to my brother who lives in CM right by that marina
He confirms the guys name was Marvin and an experienced captain

Nordbay was a 700 foot Oil Tanker with a Portuguese Flag , I checked it's current position and it was off NY at the time of the collision and it entered NY Harbor on Oct. 15th..
Every Boaters worst nightmare seeing those big ships come out of no where. You can hear tiny boats 1/2 mile away and can't hear those big ships 100 feet away.

It was a 35 foot Duffy and Duffy Downeast Boat named the Marvin B and it was out of Moriches. Father and son were returning home from a Canyon Trip and the son was steering the boat and the father was sleeping in the cabin. It collided with the Oil Tanker Nordbay about 25 miles South of Shinnecock and sank 15-20 minutes after the collision . An Epirb was activated and Station Cape Cod sent a rescue chopper, a 46 foot Lifeboat was sent out from Shinnecock to aid in the rescue. The Coast Guard arrived on scene and found floating objects, an oil sheen on the water and found the young son clinging to a cooler and rescued him. They found an empty life raft nearby. The Tanker Nordbay arrived at NY Harbor on Oct. 15th.
This is what I read , don't know if it's all true or not.
