New York State Commercial Fishing Trip Limit Changes

Bluefish Fishery Opens
  • Effective Friday, August 7, 2020, in New York State, the daily trip limit for bluefish is set at 140 pounds. This trip limit will remain in effect until further notice.
Scup Daily Trip Limit Change
  • Effective Friday, August 7, 2020, in New York State, the daily trip limit for scup is set at 400 pounds. This trip limit will remain in effect until further notice.
Black Sea Bass Fishery Opens
  • Effective Friday, August 7, 2020, in New York State, the daily trip limit for black sea bass is set at 120 pounds. This trip limit will remain in effect through August 31, 2020.
  • Effective Tuesday, September 1, 2020, the daily trip limit is set at 50 pounds. This trip limit will remain in effect until further notice.
Summer Flounder Daily Trip Limit Change
A summer flounder permit is required to commercially harvest summer flounder.

  • Effective Friday, August 7, 2020, in New York State, the daily trip limit for summer flounder is set at 280 pounds. This trip limit will remain in effect until further notice.
 
They truly believe that they can micro manage these fisheries with success. Using numbers that are more likey to be wrong. I know they're trying, and I believe that they are being"woke" but these mid-season quota changes are simply unrealistic.
 
WOW!! Wonder what bug got up their butts? Not sure if I should be applauding or irate?

If I was a small, day boat com, I think these numbers would kill my ability to make a living and it would be time to hang up the nets. One could argue that such drastic action in the middle of the COVID Chit Storm is far too much economic damage at a time when the job market and economy are reeling.

Of course I'm happy for my rec comrades down there. I just hate to see folks lose their livelihood in drastic, unplanned strokes of a pen. If you were banking on a good season to pay for braces for one of your kids, this isn't what you want to hear...

It's better than when scup was 100 lbs a day for the summer season. Bluefish last summer were paying 2.00/lb in the round. I remember getting .50/lb for them and thinking that was great. Looks like you would need to bounce between species during the day to put a catch together.
